So I am trying to get my wife on my dental and it is asking for a SSN. I had not obtained one for her yet as the social security office said that if she is not working she does not need one and looking at these forums it says to apply for one before her I-94 expires....well that was on the 25th so its already passed. What exactly do I need to do? I've been on hold forever and wondering if I should just show up at the office or if any of you have some great advice to give me.

She cannot now apply for a SSN until she has either her EAD or green card in her hands.

You now have to wait for the EAD or GC to arrive. When it does, go to the local SSA office and apply. I would also mention to them that just because you do not work they should not suggest someone not get a SSN as there are other things in life that require or are easier to do if you have a SSN. What about joint taxes when one spouse does not work. You still need a SSN for that. Your situation is the exact reason we here on VJ recommend that you get the SSN before the I-94 expires (actually the window is 2 weeks prior) because you need one for other things besides working so why not get it ASAP.

Your employer may have a way around the SSN requirement, mine did. I would ask your HR department what you can do to add your wife onto your benefits without a SSN.

Good luck,

Dave

Like Dave&Rosa, my employer gave me a temporary number to use for my wife when I added her to my medical/dental/vision plans. Then when Chie got her SSN number I went back into the app and changed the temporary number to her actuall SSN. As Dave&Rosa suggested just ask your HR rep. I'm sure they have same or similar solution for you.
