The new legislation, dubbed the Stop Online Ammunition Sales Act, rests on four pillars, according to Lautenberg's office:

It requires anyone selling ammunition to be a licensed dealer.

It requires ammunition buyers who are not licensed dealers to present photo identification at the time of purchase, effectively banning the online or mail order purchase of ammo by regular civilians.

It requires licensed ammunition dealers to maintain records of the sale of ammunition.

It requires licensed ammunition dealers to report the sale of more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition to an unlicensed person within any five consecutive business days.

Sounds like a good idea to me!

I think it would probably put a few major companies out of business thats for sure (Due to the dealer requirement, which I assume means class 1 FFL?)

Isn't this mostly aimed at preventing online sales?

There's a pawn shop here run by ex-cops, it has the largest selection of guns anywhere in this area. This will mean the people who bought items online will go to local stores, this is a good thing!

There is basically a niche market that sells ammo and other accessories that you won't find in most brick and mortar stores. They don't have FFLs which are costly to keep. So yes, local stores would get more business but at the same time the amount of diversity of goods would fall.

I'd like to know what the ammo definition is for this bill by the way. I'm guessing it would be a complete cartridge.

This also has no chance of passing.

I think small pawn shops can sell guns but don't sell ammo, the rest sell it though. Maybe it is different where you are?

This has just as much chance of passing as the voter ID law.

I've never actually stepped foot in a pawn shop. The two places I go to sell ammo and some powder but not a big selection.

Looks like you will be directly impacted by this proposed change. I think there will be some serioud opposition to this bill.

Great idea. It will teach shooters marksmanship and how to conserve ammo. The basic load in combat is much less than a thousand rounds for individual weapons.

Chris Rock proposed that bullets cost $1000 each to avoid innocent bystanders. This way if someone got shot you knew they absolutely had to have done something to deserve it.

It's funny that knee-jerk liberals assume passing yet another law will stop any crime from happening. Funnier still that people support them. I'm always amazed by otherwise intelligent people who lose all cognitive ability when it comes to things like crime. "If we make it even more illegal than this will never happen again."

It's like trying to stop drunk driving by limiting the sale of autos to sober people.

if this comes to pass, then we can all say goodbye to some of those really hard to find calibers. :(

Who wants a hard to find caliber weapon for when the zombies attack? If you are really set on firing a particularly sweet firearm, save your brass and buy a reloader. There is no good reason to use a rare piece for an everyday shooter with the typical firearm enthusiast.

Put it back in the safe, and bring it out only when you want to impress your date for the evening, or make some nOOb drool.
