My cat just did the trip a few days ago. I found a company in Australia who handles the relocation of pets. They provide a large cage and a fleece, all the vet checks required at this end, and then rechecked him on the other end. it was relatively easy with paperwork, and from Australia there is no quarantine required.

He has travelled a few times on planes, but this was a 10 hour direct flight. He is typically a placid easy going cat, and when my fiance picked him up, he was hissing and growling alot, he came out of his cage shaking, so it was traumatic somehow, but he was fine a few hours later after some petting.

I have no advice for you because our Siamese cats at home were born and raised in the US but I suggest that you move this topic to the Europe/Eurasia subforum. There may be other posters there who have already done exactly what you wanna do but they might not visit OT to see this thread. I hope you find the best solution to this and happy flying to you and your kitty! luv.gif

Many airlines enforce an embargo on pets during summer months. When I travel with my dog I normally sedate her mildly so it helps take out the edge of being confined.

As your vet for a sedative to your cat, bring the kitten on board and both of you should be fine.

I had my dog with me. It's a german shepherd so she naturally couldn't fit where passengers are. As Gegel said, look into embargo rules regardless of when you're traveling and the airline company. Your cat might fit in a cage(soft or hard) under the passenger seat infront of you, or the storage above the seats. Look into the dimensions of cages/crates before you go ahead and buy one. Call the airline up, or look on their webpage. Usually, the airline company require at least 48 hours before take off to add your cat to your reservation. UK has different rules when it comes to pets, even for a layover.

And then your cat needs to be updated on vaccinations, and proof thereof is needed. I printed a few pages from http://www.cdc.gov/animalimportation/cats.html and gave it to my vet for him to see what is was about.

I chose a flight with layover in Amsterdam because they had an animal motel(KLM) so the only time my dog was transported was when she got out of her cage. Most suggest NOT to give pets anything calming, it can mess them up when flying. Instead, I was out walking my dog 5 hours straight the day before, and 2 hours before departuring so she was exhausted and slept through most of the trip anyways. She was fine when arriving at POE :)

First one correct about embargo, second one may be a lethal cocktail because it can create respiratory and cardiovascular problems for dogs and cats who are sedated or tranquilized up in +8000 feet air.

good.gifgood.gifAbsolutely. I always sedate my dog when she flies but never without speaking to my vet first and having her checked completely.

I moved my golden retriever with me ... but because of him, and my refusal to put him on a plane (he's 10 years old, very anxious in most situations) we ended up driving the 18 hours instead.

Well it's a little bit difficult for me to drive from Germany to Seattle xD mine is also 10 years old, very scared of everything but she is used in planes. But a 10 hour or 14 hours trip with connection flight hm... I also worry when I get to the custom with my k1 visa if they k questions about the cat or take her to quarantine .

Well, yeah, I obviously was not suggesting you drive. :) Was just giving my experience.

Make sure you have all of her paperwork, show she's updated on her shots, etc. I also got a certificate from the vet stating that my dog was fit to travel internationally. Of course, nobody looked at this, but it made me feel better to have.

Bringing pets into the country is a CDC issue. The CDC is the Center for Disease Control =)

Be sure to check your airlines information on how to bring a pet. And if your cat is anxious, before the trip go to the vet and have them give you a mild tranquilizer to give to him. He will probably sleep through the whole flight.

Here is a link: http://www.cdc.gov/animalimportation/cats.html

Thankfully for you, bringing pets into the US is a lot easier than the UK.

Thats why I couldnt take my pets to UK =(

My wife sent her cat solo via Lufthansa from Minsk > Frankfurt > Chicago and then as a carry on from Chicago > Anchorage > Dillingham, Alaska. Lufthansa has an excellent record as far as pets are concerned.

btw she picked up the cat at the US Customs once she arrived in Chicago a day after the cat did. It was hassle free from what she says.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Good to know. I called today a pet airline that makes all of the transfers with Lufthansa, they are expensive but they assured me that the cat will be fine, they will give her water and as long as she has vaccinations she will be fine.

I brought my fiance's cat home with me from the Netherlands in January and he had to have a statement of health fit to travel from the vet, all shots current, and he had an animal passport. I carried him in a soft carrier as my carryon item but hated having to put him under the seat for takeoff and landings. He did really well considering he had never traveled that far and we had to go through customs in Minnesota before flying on to Indianapolis. We were told no food or drink after a certain time and though I tried to get him to drink since we were traveling so very long - maybe at least 16 hours - he was not really interested in it or the treats I brought. The treats got confiscated by Customs even though I bought them in the U.S. I did not have the receipt. I was really worried about the whole thing, but the little guys was great.
