My fiancee has a BSN, bachelors of science in nursing from a college in the Philippines. Will this be accepted in the U.S. for employment in health care? She has not passed the philippines national nursing exam yet. She barely missed on the first try and had to start working (in another field) to help her family.

Will her degree be accepted to work in the health care field? She is hoping to at least be employed here in California as a medical assistant. Does anyone know what the requirements are to become a medical assistant in California? Surely someone with a BSN would qualify. If anyone is familiar with this please let me know.

Thanks!

Philippine nurses could work in the US as a nurse or in any related health care job. To become a US Registered Nurse, she needs to pass the NCLEX state board exam. She could take it while in the Philippines or in the US. Good luck !

I don't know the answers to your questions.

However, if your fiancée ever wants to work as an RN in California, she may want to find out whether she needs to pass the NLE first. If she plans on getting approval through the state of California to sit for the NCLEX-RN, California's state nursing board may or may not require the NLE. It's my understanding that some states do require it and some states don't.

She could work as a nurse here in California but she needs to pass the NCLEX. But first, before she could be eligible to take the test, the board of nursing needs to evaluate her credentials. There are several requirements before she could apply in California Board of Nursing. Number one requirement and a must is the SSN. That means, she could only apply for a license in California once she gets here and has her SSN. Some states don't require this. So, she could apply and take the NCLEX in Manila while she's still there.

No, CABON (California Board of Nursing) doesn't require license from the Philippines. But if she has one, it's a plus because right now CABON had modified their requirements and very strict in evaluating the nursing credentials for those who graduated outside US. Process and evaluation take 6 mos to less than a year (also depends how fast she and her school submit all the requirements to CABON). I, myself has an application submitted already last April. I'm looking forward that this will take at least 8 mos. I'm expecting also that before I get eligible to take the test, they will require me to attend classes. Get some units that are lacking from the nursing course In the Philippines. I know someone who graduated in the Philippines that had been denied to take the test. So, she decided to move in NY to get the license and work there.

As for the medical assistant job she's planning to, that is possible but she needs to take the classes for that or maybe can challenge the test requirement to get certified. Most of the jobs here in US specially in Medical field need license/certificate either you are a nursing aid or medical assistant.

Do a search on here, as it has been covered quite a few times. As well check out allnurses.com in the International forum. Best of luck

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1
