Hi all. I can't believe it's been 3&1/2 years since I first started using VisaJourney! I just became a US citizen this week and here I am posting another question!

Does anybody know if I could possibly sponsor my mother to come to the US if I am currently unemployed but receiving unemployment benefits? I used to have a good income until I lost my job this April. I want to bring my mom here so I could apply for jobs that require a lot of travel. I have a two year old baby and my husband works at night, so bringing my mom here to watch the baby would be very helpful and would give me more options. However, I am concerned that my petition might not be approved if I am unemployed. Does anybody have any experience on this? Can I include the unemployment benefit amount I receive as a source of income? Thanks in adavance for taking time to reply.

You will have to still show you make enough money to take care of her. If not you will need a another co sponser with you. Maybe your husband if his income is enough. But you will still be the sponser along with your husband to show enough income for your house.

You can use all of the income in your household to sponsor. If that doesn't meet the requirements you can get another co sponsor as well.

Good luck with that plan. Bringing mom over to take care of the children while both parents work has been a failure for every one of our friends that tried it. Mom usually gets bored after a couple weeks and wants to go back home. She doesn't know anybody, American kids are insolent, and she can't go anywhere to get away.

The safer course of action is to have your husband be a joint sponsor using the forum I-864A along with your I-864.
