Giving illegals amnesty and making sure people don't have to have an ID to vote, is only done for one reason.

I understand that, and it pisses me off. I don't care what "side" you're on, you should want our elections to be fair and legal. ID's might not completely solve the problem, but it would help, and how can anyone be against it?

People that are against are the ones that will end up getting the votes of voters with no ID.

I have no problem with ID as long as government agencies are required to take a pro-active role in ensuring every eligible voter can get the documents he/she needs. If the approach is one of "here's a hoop, jump through it to prove you're worthy" then that I have a problem with.

What about those with religious objections to being photographed? (The Amish and certain sects of the Mennonite community are among those who object to having their photos taken because of their faith.)

Will they be issued a non-photo ID?

I have no idea. I am sure something can be worked out for them. Maybe a retinal scan? lol.

I keep hearing these anecdotes of poor old people in the middle of nowhere who don't have birth certificates and no money to get them. I want to see government agencies actively assist these people. It will cost money but if voter fraud is as big a problem as we're told it is, surely cleaning up the system is worth a one-time investment.

Exactly. They put on buses to take people to get an ID, did they pay for them to get time off work? Did they pay for the documents they needed? No.

I have a soft spot for the elderly and I really don't believe that they are part of the voter fraud problem, so for everyone over 65, I agree with you, let's help them get their id's with whatever assistance they need. But I'm not so sure the taxpayers should be responsible to pay for someone who simply lost or misplaced their documents, I don't like having to pay for someone elses carelessness. If you or I were to lose any of our documents, we would have to pay to replace them.

Nobody gets paid to take time off from work to go to a gov't building for service, it's part of life, we all deal with, no exceptions. Besides, if they're working, doesn't that blow a whole in your reasoning of why they would be on a bus anyway? If they can get back and forth to work, then they can get back and forth to the DMV. And how would they be gainfully employed without an id to begin with. All employers in the US are required to get a photo id from whoever they are hiring.

No? Lots of people get a ride to work, ride a bike or get the bus. There is no DMV in this city, hence it is 15 miles away. You have a selective memory.

I have no soft spot for the elderly. I just want to see us enable participation in the electoral process. We can't make people vote but we can eliminate barriers and if we're going to create a new hoop for people to jump through (get an id), I want to see us put our money where our mouth is and actually help people who are willing to ask for help. Some people (the truly apathetic) will never even ask for help getting a voter id so they're not the issue.

Regarding paying - I'm not suggesting we pay for documents for people who can afford them. But if you're poor and you take the effort to show up at a (say) social security office to ask for help getting a voter id, I'd like to see government make it happen. If we create a new requirement, it's ethical to help those who ask for help meet that requirement. JMHO.

I think he is talking about the national voting card, issued by the federal government.

Or any documents an individual might need to get that document.

I don't know how much problem voter fraud actually is.

It's a non issue which is being drummed up to better the GOPs chances in 2012. If this was about the integrity of the vote, then why does none of the voter ID laws address any of the few and far between cases of voter fraud that have been observed? And why would the GOP leave the absentee ballot alone altogether. Hint: Absentee ballots favor Republicans. This is about manipulating the elections. Nothing more.

If it was at the SS office it would be a lot easier. There is one of those here, with a bus service.
