Problem with Tax Returns - I-485

I received RFE-Inital a few weeks ago where USCIS requested tax returns from our joint sponsor. The tax returns were filed promptly with the IRS and a copy was sent to the USCIS a few days ago (the status on their site says RFE-Response Review). However today we were informed by our joint sponsor his tax returns were rejected by IRS due to an error, and he's in the process of refiling them again. Can my I-485 be effected by this? More importantly can anybody tell me what important steps should I take at this juncture?

Of course that will affect you! You need proof of the co-sponsor's income, and they want copies of the taxes and generally W2's also. Or a tax transcript, which will not be available until the taxes are filed and accepted. Find another sponsor or get the info from your co-sponsor in a hurry. I suppose you could also try a different co-sponsor that has had taxes accepted already and makes enough to qualify.

Thanks for your response, Caryh. We are in the process of rectifying the tax returns so an approved/acceptable copy is sent to USCIS. I am wondering if I need to inform USCIS at this juncture of this discovery, or allow them to contact me once they have discovered it? Perhaps calling them would help so they can outline the next course of action? I'm afraid since they had already asked for an RFE once, they might just deny my application... could that be possible?

I am very worried at this stage and am hoping to know what's in store/what's the next course of action.

You need to reply to the RFE in the time frame they specify or you will be denied. You need to fully respond to their request also, or you will be denied. They're not going to get back in touch with you except with a denial if you don't reply in time. Remember tax returns sent in have to be complete copies, with all the back up documentation sent to the IRS. You can't send just the form, they need the proof to.
