  1. 1. When should mods change a topic title?

    • Only when it violates the TOS
    • When the mood hits them.
  2. 2. Should the old title be included in the description?

    • Yes, and edited if necessary not to violate the TOS
    • That would be telling.
  3. 3. Should the moderator making the changes to the title note the changes prominently by inserting a comment?

    • Yes, no reason to be subtle about censorship.
    • I don't have an answer.

What is with the arbitrary changing of topic titles, especially in the P&R forum? Often the title of an OP article does not conform with the OP's intent for the discussion, especially when the discussion topic is specifically stated in the original post.

Many political message boards on the Internet have a rule requiring posters to use the original title.

It has two benefits. One, it avoids duplicate posts (not a huge problem on VJ P&R since we're pretty low traffic). Two, it avoid baiting and incendiary titles intended to inflame.

There is a workaround though. Get > 1 article on the Internet, post them together as your own personal blog post... and you can pick any title you want.

I would think the only time to change it would be if it was misleading or if vulgar words were used in it. There may be other reasons but those are the two that come to mind.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Yes, I can think of a few workarounds, for instance, not putting an article in the OP, rather adding it as a comment later on.

I couldn't accept with a clear conscience. It would be like letting the fox in the hen house.

If you ever make mod on here I have a list of names for ya to take care of.
