Because it is false. As a real Brit I find it insulting that some American thinks he is also a Brit. He doesn't know anything about Britain, which has been made very clear from his series of gaffes. Can I randomly claim to be from whatever country I want? People who are actually from these countries can't take these people seriously.

But you know what it means when an American says "I'm Irish", right? It just means that's where his ancestors are from. Every American who says it knows that. So really, try to relax.

As an American I am stunned by his ignorance...

It is a lose-lose situation, I am afraid.

I understand it obviously, I don't agree with it though. Anyone who says that to me is written off as an idiot. They could say "I have Irish family", but they don't, they claim to actually be Irish. My neighbour claims to be English, she doesn't know anything about England. Maybe Romney should have a cup of tea with her and they can relate on how little they know about anything. :P

Romney isn't "English", his wife isn't Welsh etc etc.

Not anymore. Picture Obama saying 'I'm Kenyan' or 'I'm British'... Can you hear the thunder?

Not quite but it comes close?

The president introduced himself, even though the crowd was already chanting his name. "My name is Barack Obama, of the Moneygall Obamas, and I've come home to find the apostrophe we lost somewhere along the way," he said.

Moneygall is the tiny town in County Offaly that gave birth to the president's Irish ancestor, Falmouth Kearney, the grandfather of his maternal grandfather.

Besides, since he is applying for a job in the White House, it might behoove him to say unequivocally 'I am an American'.

Those who criticized Obama for the 'apology tour' [sic] will certainly lambast Romney for denying his American citizenship and heritage...

I don't know what to tell you. If you like to go through life passing judgment on people, so be it.

I don't have time for people who are having an identity crisis and want to pretend to be something they aren't. That's something you should grow out of when you're a teenager.

Well ok then

:P

Let's just say the institutional ties between the two economies are too large for two men to get in the way.

Of course this is true but the media won't let this one go. We had enough of the republicans when Bush was around, he's turning into Bush #2. He's made enough gaffes to compete with him for #1.

It is almost as though you can count on any GOP candidate, on British soil, to deliver a barrage of misconceived and embarrassing statements, as though to provide the media with an endless source of material for comedy skits.

I suspect the BBC has the GOP under contract!
