Alrighty..

I'm hoping there will be great info posted regarding this topic!

First off, I'm a Canadian so I am very new to understanding the American health care system. My to-be-husband is self-employed, in the "low-income bracket" construction worker with NO medical coverage. As a bachelor, he never even thought about health care plans! Typical male?

My K-1 Visa is almost complete and of course, after the wedding, we'd like to have children. Does anyone know of plans that don't make you wait 1 year to get pregnant? We might wait the year, but I want to cover everything while I am exploring options. Also, somewhere on VJ, I read you CAN take advantage of the State's health-care plans, others have say no because of the Affidavat of Support, the Sponsor would have to re-pay all of it down the road. I'm so confused!

Someone please give FRIENDLY advice to this lost Canadian!

I-134 and 864 which are basically the affidivit of support because explains that the beneficiary of the K1 will not be a public charge. What is consider a public charge? Any government based subisdy including the WIC program, Foodstamp, Cash Assistance, Medicaid, and Medicare. Now your husband can qualify for government assistance for medicare or medicaid and any children you two may have but you on the other hand cannot because of what he said and swear to the oath. Most employers offer health insurance, the best case scenario is for you to get a job it doesnt matter where. You can get a decent health coverages.

PS: I work with a guy who use to have his own business, he got sick and he shut his business down. He took a $15 an hour job with the statement government and now he has the best health care in the world. All it takes is for you to get a job. Sometimes the benefits from a job outweights the compensation .

You should take a look at the PRO Benefits site to see the various plans offered in Washington State: http://probenefitswa.com/

Be sure to read the details because that's usually where the information on what's covered and when are buried. If becoming pregnant is a priority, you may want to be prepared to pay a higher rate. Good luck!

Have the US citizen look into what their health plan covers when a spouse is added. Or, be responsible adults and arrange to pay for the care yourselves.
