A Hamas leader asked the international community on Monday not to cut aid to the Palestinian Authority, insisting the money would go toward helping the Palestinian people and Hamas was willing to have its spending monitored.

Ismail Haniyeh, a Hamas leader in Gaza, also said the Islamic militant group is ready to negotiate the terms of continued foreign aid with donor countries.

If you ask me, they're nuts. Asking for aid from the US and Europe while insisting to pursue their goal of destroying Isreal? They ought to get real down there...

Note that they have said that they're willing to negotiate 'terms' of continued foreign aid. Sounds like an opening to me.

I think any opening is worth pursuing, now that they have been democratically elected.

You can't support democracy "as long as they only elect the right people". We have to deal with what we have here, and talks and negotiations are better than provoking a potentially volatile situation.

IMHO!!!

Nothing to negotiate...it is against US law tp give aid to terrorist organizations. Same for the other EU countries. If Hamas discontinues violence against and recognizes Isreals right to exist...aid can and will continue

Well I guess this is as good a place as any to point out the obvious.

A lot has happened in the last 2 and a half years -- Israel has killed nearly a thousand more Palestinians (nearly half of them children,) left countless others maimed, and has kept one and a half million people under siege... all because Israel insisted it "would never talk to Hamas."

And yet, here we are -- the latest headlines from Israel:

Israel to agree unofficially to Egypt cease-fire deal; skeptical Barak to discuss plan with Mubarak Monday

Israel-Hamas truce in Gaza could take effect later this week

You forgot to mention the relentless rocket attacks on the Jews. Not a shock.
