That is where we differ. I am against anyone preventing people from voicing their opinion, regardless of their political persuasion. I don't give my fellow conservatives a pass on that one.

We don't differ at all in this regard. I was speaking in context of the thread, it is the gays and liberals that are protesting against the owner of Chik Fil A's right to free speech. Free speech is a right for all Americans.

, you never see any other group of people protest to the extent that liberals do. It

You may not remember the boycott of P&G, because someone came up with the notion their logo was a satanic symbol.Younmay not recall the boycott of Disney when they created LGBT day.

I am sorry to tell you but we conservatives are as much to blame, according to your rationale, as the liberals. It is almost as though it would be an exercise in futility to try and simplify the entire political spectrum and its nuances into the simplistic notion of liberals and conservatives. The spectrum is far broader than that and not one singe person fits entirely into one of the two categories.

They're not protesting free speech itself. They're protesting what's been said.

Say whatever you want, but when what you say is offensive to an entire group of people ... expect to hear about it from those people.

Plenty of right wingers protest ridiculous stuff.

Remember One Million Moms protesting and boycotting JC Penney because they employed Ellen Degeneres?

http://onemillionmoms.com/

Check them out. They're protesting a new show that shows homosexual parents.

They're protesting Oreo cookies!!

Ergo, their right to protest is also considered free speech. I don't think anyone is trying to silence anyone else.

It's action and reaction. Your right to free speech and mine are one and the same.

If I were to condemn the protest, I would be guilty of the stifling of which you speak.

It may be ridiculous, but it's their right to do so. As long as protests are peaceful, I personally don't care. I've only protested once in my entire life, and while some people find it empowering, I found it tiring and stupid.

But then again, my country never treated me like a second class citizen or denied me any rights. I haven't a clue what that feels like, but if I did, I might protest it too.

It's a bit of a slap in the face to be told "we will treat you with respect and dignity" but know that if you're not in their store, they're throwing money at groups that are against YOU getting married. That'd be a tough pill to swallow.

The easier answer is to just not eat there. But some people feel the need to "do something" about it. It won't work, in this case.

I protested once in my life also, I was a junior in High School and we had a "walk out" to protest the school taking away our outdoor lunches. I really didn't care about the outcome either way, because I got out of school at 11:30 for our work release program so I wasn't there for lunches anyway. It was a way to get out of class for half a day without getting suspended. We lost the protest and had to eat our lunches in the cafeteria instead of being allowed to roam the streets for 30 minutes, smoke pot and eat a tuna sandwich. The next year I graduated, got a full time job and put myself through a 2 year college. I've never stopped working since, have never protested again, nor had anything worth my while to protest for. I too find it silly for the most part. There are very few things actually worth "taking it to the streets". Protesting in that manner has become lame and obnoxious, just look at the so called "occupy movement", that's gotta be the biggest bunch of losers ever assembled.

it doesn't matter because what is at the center is not the objective of the protest, so much as our birthright to protest, afforded by the Constitution.

Personally I find it disgusting the type of lame protest such as the ones staged by the WBC and I have crossed paths with them on occasion, speaking of a bunch of losers, bigger than the OWS movement. Despite my personal opinions, I agree with the SCOTUS on their ruling.

I protested back in the day when GWB was President and he came to Ottawa ... it was fun for about twenty minutes.

I flew our flag upside down during his entire regime...

I agree that most protests are ridiculous and lame, but I also agree that everyone has a right to do so. I just don't see the need to do so every time someone farts in somebody elses direction, it's a cry for attention from people that have too much free time on their hands. Their are certain people who abuse this right, but eventually they are seen for what they really are.

That is at the center of living in a democracy. It is a daily compromise of our position vis a vis that of others.

I compare free speech with commuting on the 405 - which is a very, very, very congested freeway in So. Cal. At times you wish you could flip a switch in your car and make everyone else disappear, and then you realize the guy behind you may be driving the same model as you...

Protests are one of the ways that we make things change in this country. I roll my eyes at a lot of them because I find their cause to be stupid, but I support their right to do it.

I don't participate in protests mostly because I'm not "that type" and most things don't inspire me enough to put the time and energy into them. But I'm glad there are people who do.

I personally won't ever spend my money chick-fil-a because of their anti-gay views. I also don't ever give money to the boy scouts, and I won't shop at Leatherby's ice cream. I don't want my money being used to finance discriminatory agendas.

They will probably never know how much money they lose because of people like me - the quiet ones. And it probably won't even hurt them. But at least I know that I attempt to live the principles I claim to believe in.

And Liberals don't?

Sigh. When did I say that?

Teddy made the comment that you do not see any other group, other than liberals, who protest to this extent.

I was simply saying, it goes both ways.

Just like a lot of the people protesting against Chik Fil A.
