Well, hell...if marriage between a man and a woman is good for society, I think we should make divorce unconstitutional, embrace mandated marriage by a certain age, and force peeps to have children.

Once there is no real definition of marriage, it is not a big deal, in fact why even bother?

To your other point-

People who have no interest in having kids and making a family (for what ever reason) (in a saner time) have always gotten married to honor marriage. and of course to live respectably.

For and older couple to shack-up would be an act of degrading proper social living arraignment.

since the cultural revolution we have chipped away at these things until now a women who doesn't even bother to get married can pump out kids insist the tax payer support them and act as a mini hero for her struggles.

I think the fairest thing you can say about people who get married and don't have kids is that they get married - beyond the act of marriage you can't really speculate on why they get married. You say to "honour marriage" but doesn't that mean what I already said - that it's a largely symbolic act? What does to 'live respectably' mean? To not drop trousers in the middle of a shopping mall and take a sh!t?

The "cultural revolution" as you put it (I'd be interested to know what you understand by that term) now allows a woman to have a kid without suffering the social stigma that forces her to uses a backstreet abortionist. Who knew. I guess you really to figure out exactly what it is you want - women having kids they can't afford or women having abortions to prevent them from having kids they can't afford.

Incidentally the term 'shack up' arises out of the old stigma about men and women living together and having sex without being married. It's an archaic term that harks back to the 1950s. Plenty of people live together and even have kids together without being married. To use a term like that really only underlines that your opinion on homosexual relationships (as on people who 'shack up') is hopelessly antiquated.

Danno, your logic is really messed up, because disallowing gay marriage has nothing to do with the birth rate. Gays will still be gay, even if they can't marry. So the whole 'have children' argument is quite moot.

Not to mention, gay people can and do have children too. Shouldn't those kids be allowed to come from a MARRIED HOUSEHOLD???

This function and definition of marriage was around with minor variation long before you and I or this country was ever thought of.

IF "I" along could decide we would not need all this discussion. I would look as see what institutions historically have worked to elevate nations and which ones left their people on the woodland floor.

You keep alluding to culture being degraded and chipped away at, but at the same time you seem to think that the act of formally recognising a homosexual relationship will turn your country into a Mad Max post apocalyptic wasteland.
