My boyfriend and I plan to elope in January in Colorado before returning to Costa Rica where we live. We'll only be in the USA for a week so we need to get everything done. What is the process of getting married? You apply for a marriage license then get married? Can you do all that at the courthouse? Would my boyfriend (non US cit) need any extra ID besides a birth certificate and passport?

I guess I should just call the courthouse in CO. :bonk: But if someone could just give me a general idea it'd be nice!

Don't make fun, I've never been married before!

You can find the requirements online. Look for marriage in the county you plan to get married in. It will tell you. It varies by state and county, so we can't tell you.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Which county? We went in and applied for the Marriage License. We both used our passports for ID. Paid the fee. The license is good for 30 days. We decided to get married a few days later at the courthouse. The Jefferson County courthouse does the weddings at 4:30pm and some other time during the day--I know of the 4:30pm as that is when we decided to get married. You get married and the judge and your two witnesses sign the Marriage License and it becomes the Marriage Certificate. You then record the Marriage Certificate at the Clerk's office and can request certified copies at I think $2 per copy. They will mail the original back to you at the address you specify. Took 4 days to receive it back--go married on Thursday and received original on Monday. Most counties are the same maybe with the exception of Denver and Boulder and maybe Broomfield.

Good luck,

Dave

I've seen the website before, I was looking for more of what the process is. What you do first, then what you do, etc. Thanks!

Generally, these are the steps.

1. Find someone willing to marry you. Once you've found this person, move fast before he/she changes his/her mind.

2. Buy a marriage license. Some jurisdictions will impose additional requirements like asking you to attend a class on what marriage means blah blah.

3. Take the marriage license to someone allowed to perform marriages. A priest or a judge, for example.

4. Pay them.

5. You're married.

a few minor additions:

1a. if necessary, serve more alcohol.

6. argue over seat up or down, and flap over or flap under for the toilet paper.

Ummm what? I don't know who you spoke to. I suggest you go in person. That's not normally how it works.

It works like that in some states. Some do not require an officiant of any sort.

That's so weird! So people can just say "we're married!" and that's it?
