Entered on K1.

Got SSN before being married.

Did not get married name changed with SS before I-94 expired.

AOS approved and received green card (I-554).

Tried to use I-551 to get name changed on SS card.

Was told that the name in the DHS data base did not match the name on the I-554.

Question: How long should it take from I-554 card issue till the computer data base is also updated?

Typically 2 weeks or less. I would go back to the SSA with your passport, GC, and marriage certificate to get your name changed. That way you have proof of age (GC and passport), proof for ID (GC in married name, passport I will assume is in maiden name) and proof of name change (marriage certificate). That should be enough as a USC can get their name changed with proper ID in the maiden name and a marriage certificate. There is no DHS database to check. I would also take notes on date, time, and all the people you speak to name's so if you have any problems you go home and e-mail the main SSA office for them to give you assistance (you may want to do that before going to your local SSA office).

I think if you had your marriage certificate there would be no need to check the DHS database as you are supplying them with an official document that is recognized as an official name change and by not taking in the marriage certificate you are relying on the DHS database as proof that your GC was issued in your married name (forget the fact that the name is on the GC--this is the government and it has to be in there computer system or you donot exist :) .)

Good luck,

Dave

We have a couple of folders for documents. Been adding to it from the beginning of this process. So we had EVERY THING including the certified marriage document.

All she wanted was GC, form 5-SS and Certified Marriage License.

The lady made a point to look for the raised seal and signature on the back of marriage document. She made a copy of it and added it to her file.

Wife signed both of the 5-SS forms in front of her so she knew who signed it.

It was as if she did not trust what the green card said unless she could verify it on-line. I am not 100% sure what data base she was looking in but she did say that it was related to the green card.

Something just occurred to me. the agent trusted what we presented as being true and accurate enough to let my wife sign with her married name to get a SSN for her daughter. But not enough to change the name on her own existing SSN.
