Dear all,

I am from India and currently working in a software firm in India for the last 2 years after my btech. after my 12th standard , I officially changed my name in india to Benny Paul(my current name) from Abin Benny Paul(old name) through a gazette notification of one of the state governments in india. The reason was that I did not like my old name. After changing my name I changed my name in bank documents, replaced by old passport and took a new one with new name(by furnishing the gazette notification), took a driving license(new name ) and pan card(new name). After that I studied b.tech with new name in the records and currently I am employed in my company with my new name in records. Now I am planning for doing MS in one of the US universities. My current problem is for my birth certificate, 12th standard certificate and 10th standard certificate, I have my old name in the records and for all other certificates including my btech marksheet,my new name is there. I was unable to change the names in birth certificate, 10th std & 12th standard since I changed my name after that and also the authorities wont permit changing it. I have been instructed to cite the gazette notification also along with these documents whenever I submit my certificates and that would suffice.

My question is, having two names in certificates is of any problem for my admission procedures and visa processing to the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. If there are some problems what are the ways to rectify it. Kindly reply to my query..

Thanks In Advance :)

You will be asked what names you have used in the past and to bring proof of name change documentation. Shouldn't be a problem.

they won't ask for a proof for the other names, they gonna check your passport for the current name and that's it. when you apply for an immigrant visa, you would need the proof of the name change if it's not the same as your BC, but you are applying for F1, just relax and write everything as it appears in your new passport

thanks myafi1985,

one more doubt. If anybody knows about this condition please reply. My brother is in US. So I stand the chance of going to US once the filing process gets through. You had said that "when you apply for an immigrant visa, you would need the proof of the name change if it's not the same as your BC"

actually i took BIRTH CERTIFICATE after my name change. But the officials did not give my birth certificate in my new name since it was registered at the time of my birth in my old name. They told me that, they will issue in my old name and whenever I need to use the

birth certificate just cite the gazette notification also to prove that I have changed my name to new name. My doubt is - the date on

the birth certificate issue is well after I changed my name through an official gazette notification. Will that be a problem when I try to apply for a PR or citizenship? Kindly reply to this as I have been thinking about this without any pointers or information on this for years.

Thanks in advance

I had the same problem when l first came.my i_20 last name was different from my passport last name and they almost sent me back at the port of entry.l pleaded with them and they gave me two options.l had to change my passport or i20 to either one of my last names.l changed my i20 which was easier.they gave me one month to do that.
