Folks, let’s loosen up a little bit and shy away, for a brief moment anyway, from the sober discussions concerning the rigamaroles of immigration and about sweet and sour relationships.

Decades ago in my formative years, I was a runner for a numbers game ("jueteng”) in the P.I. Shame on me for my juvenile innocence, I did not know jueteng was illegal! How about you? What was your first job?

I think it was selling berries we picked in the overgrown creek at the end of the street. I remember it because I got an 1861 indian head penny from one of the neighbors - foolish me, I bought gum with it.

Then I got a job in a liquor store - stocking the shelves and selling at the counter. This lasted for 6 months before I entered the Army for 4 years.

8 years old, I shoveled snow off driveways. $1 for a normal snow, $2 if over 6 inches. First actual paycheck was at age 11. I delivered a local advertising paper. One cent per house delivered to 360 houses, once a week. Felt I was rich at that time with $3.60 per week coming in.

My FIRST job was at 8 years of age, hoeing weeds in a one-acre garden. The pay? A roof over my head, and food on our table. My first money-making job was at 13, mowing yards. Did that all thru school, until 12th grade, when I worked cleaning up at an egg processing plant at night. I think I started that at $3.35 an hour.

biggrin.gif Have you also played jai alai?

At 16, I was requested by a neighbor in Cebu City to be her son's academic tutor for Php 50 per hour. He was in first year high school. Their house was right across ours so it wasn't that difficult to juggle a full course load in college and a sideline. A year later, I was offered another gig one kilometer from the state university where I studied and was getting Php 100 per hour tutoring a kid in fourth grade. I was making at least Php 900 every five days so I started buying my own clothes, eating out often, and taking home some goodies. That was in 2004 when fifty pesos to a student would still go quite a long way.

My first real job after four years in college was high school teaching. I was 19 years old then, nearing 20. A few months later, my family moved to the countryside and I decided to stay in the city for my job. With a base salary of Php 8,000 it did hurt a bit to pay the rent, feed myself and give a little something to my family occasionally but the challenge was quite fun. All of these happened before I met my husband online.

Now that I'm looking back, I can say that all those experiences have sort of helped me prepare for my move to the US. My husband once asked me why I never seemed to have an adjustment period when I arrived here. Living on my own in the past with scant resources somehow made me adaptable, especially to positive changes.

Thanks for sharing. That's quite inspirational.

I started off in the porn industry, which led to running drugs between Columbia and the USA out of Cuba. That of course led to international arms sales, and finally I decided I better lay low with a paper route at age 13.

Yeah, I remember reading about that, oh-so-many years ago on a PBS documentary. Seems you were lacking the proper equipment, then not enough weapons to satisfy your customers. Glad that whole newspaper thing worked out for ya!
