Anaheim riot 2012: Police-involved shooting causes unrest and arrests

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Authorities remained on alert Wednesday after protesters set fires, smashed windows and threw rocks at officers in a fourth day of violent protests over deadly police shootings, ending with 24 arrests and several injuries.

As many as 500 demonstrators and 250 police from several Orange County cities were involved in seven hours of confrontations that ended around 2 a.m., Sgt. Bob Dunn said.

Most protesters were peaceful, but officers used pepper balls and beanbag rounds after some became violent. Police remained on tactical alert Wednesday morning.

The clashes followed a City Council meeting Tuesday in which city leaders voted to ask the U.S. attorney's office to investigate weekend officer-involved shootings that killed two men and prompted a $50 million civil-rights lawsuit.

While most protesters were peaceful, some appeared to be outsiders who "were prone to violence and wanted to incite" [p]olice, Dunn said.

Some demonstrators took over an intersection, and a splinter group walked to the scene of one police shooting and back, throwing rocks, vandalizing cars and throwing a Molotov cocktail that damaged a police car, Dunn said.

Throughout the night, knots of protesters spread through downtown, setting fires in trash cans and smashing windows of businesses, including a Starbucks, Dunn said. There also were reports that a T-shirt store was looted, he said.

A gas station was shut down after reports that some protesters were seen filling canisters with gas.

Police used pepper balls and beanbag rounds. Twenty adults and four minors were arrested, Dunn said.

I love ghetto protesting they destroy their own town and think that they showed them...lmao

There is a highly organized core group that is a combination of passionate Obama sycophants and anarchists that are attending these events and causing most of the vandalism. This is not that different from when Berkeley radicals subverted the peace and freedom movement across the bay at Haight-Ashbury. Those were the same folks that empowered the Black Panthers to be their military wing, because most hippies were about personal exploration, and not sticking it to the man.

That was homegrown, was it not? Most of this violence is imported.

After that one day of looting most of the people arrested were not from Oakland.

The problem all along with the OW group is that the anarchist jumped into the fray.

Like I said, the same thing happened with the hippies, that were basically benign at first, then folks started taking advantage of young, impressionable minds. Kids have all the enthusiasm, but little comparative life experience. That makes them good draftees and recruits. Passive resistance takes time and perseverance. There are strict rules to make it work, as Gandhi and later King required of their followers, but youth also lacks patience and can be easily distracted by the here and now.

California invites this kind of trouble. That place reaps what it sows. Jan Quan egged on the Occupy bunch by not only inviting them to protest, but giving city workers the day off to protest with them. All this was done against the advice and wishes of the Oakland police. Now you have California giving amnesty to illegals with the California Dream Act and low and behold Anaheim is having a problem with it's Hispanic population vs the Anaheim police.

California keeps shooting itself in the foot over and over and over again. It's like they don't have a clue in those parts.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."
