Police shot and killed an armed man a south Dallas neighborhood of the city, prompting a tense situation with hundreds of gathering neighbors, many of whom were very emotional.

LIVE & TAPE: WATCH VIDEO FROM THE SCENE

The shooting happened at about 5:30 p.m. at a known drug house in the 5300 block of Bourquin Street. Police were responding to calls about a possible kidnapping.

Police said the suspect shot at officers, who returned fire, killing the man. Another suspect fled and was later arrested, police said.

No officers were injured, police said.

However, a crowd of hundreds gathered at the scene, prompting to police to call for additional crowd control support, both by ground and by air.

In fact, officers armed with pepper ball guns and shields forced the crowd back amid reports of people trying to cut through fences to gain access to the shooting scene.

FOX 4 News reported that, according to initial reports, the slain man's inconsolable mother confronted police at the scene and refused to leave. She said her 31-year-old son had been shot in the back while fleeing police.

A man who identified himself as the dead man's father said his 32-year-old son, whom he identified as James Harper, was unarmed.

"No reason for him to be shot like a dog. If he's running away from them, ain't no reason," James White said.

A chaotic fight also briefly broke out between some in the crowd.

Meanwhile, the body of the slain suspect remained at the shooting scene and was being guarded by police.

By about 6:30 p.m. the volatile crowd shrank a bit and divided into smaller groups as Dallas police announced its SWAT team was being deployed to the still potentially explosive situation. But citizens quickly began re-gathering.

As the evening wore on, the crowd calmed and most dispersed.

At one point Dallas City Councilman Dwaine Caraway headed to the standoff to help calm the crowd.

Dallas police will hold a news conference at 9 p.m. to address the matter.

Chief: Officer opened fire after fearing for his life

"After jumping the third fence after Harper, Officer Rowden was basically out of energy and just clinging to Harper, who was beating on him," Chief Brown said. "Officer Rowden states at this time Harper said, 'You're gonna have to kill me.'"

Chief Brown said the officer, fearing for his life, pulled his weapon and shot Harper in the stomach and the hand. The chief said Harper has a long criminal history.

Brown said no weapon was found on Harper, and that there was no evidence that any of the officers had been fired upon. He said it was not clear why the officer did not use a Taser or other non-lethal weapon to subdue Harper.

Sounds like he messed up on this one.

Edit: Apparently the phone call was spoofed, interesting.

#3 - Someone shot in South Dallas is not news around here. The fact that it was a cop that did the shooting and not a hoodlum perhaps is though...

#4 - Dallas sucks.

Do you like anything?

Obviously the reason this is news is because it was a cop and he shot someone unarmed. Pretty sure that isn't allowed...

ya, is different strata in South Dallas. Not Really 'National News' but rather, just another day in the hood.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Ran across a news article in a newspaper - there was a quote from the mother (I paraphrase) :

I knew he was selling weed, and I knew some day he'd be killed for it.

---

So, Mom made choices along the way, when raising him, for her son to 'turn out' this way.

Yay Mom.

Another drug dealer dead. At least there were no 'illegal alien' issues with this police shooting.
