BIDDEFORD, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- State Police say Timothy Courtois was driving 112mph on the Maine Turnpike with his emergency flashers on, when an officer pulled him over Sunday morning. State Police Spokesman Steve McCausland says they found an AK-47 assault weapon, four handguns and several boxes of ammunition, in Courtois' car.

State Police say that during routine questioning at the stop, Courtois threw some red flags in his behavior. Among them, police say he had purchased the black Ford Mustang he was pulled over in the day after the shooting. Police say Courtois told them he planned to modify the vehicle so it could outrun police in a chase.

Courtois told police he was on his way to Derry, New Hampshire to shoot a former employer. He also said he had been to see The Dark Knight Rises in Saco the night before, with a loaded gun in his backpack.

McCausland says police then searched Courtois's home, at 344 Elm Street in Biddeford, and found several additional guns, a machine gun, and thousands of rounds of ammunition.

Also found in his car were newspaper clippings about the shooting at the Colorado movie theater. Police say that Courtois told them he had attended "The Dark Knight Rises" on Saturday night at Cinemagic Theater in Saco, with a loaded gun in his backpack. Police tell us that the guns found in the car are the same kind of guns used in the Colorado shooting.

Police believe that Courtois obtained most of his guns legally, although they say he did have one illegal automatic weapon. The investigation into exactly how he acquired such a stockpile of guns and ammunition remains open.

When asked about the gun in the backpack, Cinemagic's spokesperson said the company had no way of knowing whether Courtois did indeed attend the showing. They say the company has a generally policy against allowing customers to come in with backpacks, but whether that policy is enforced is up to the individual employees inside the theater.

McCausland says that State Police have been assisted in the investigation by the FBI and ATF.

Gosh, I can't imagine there's a problem here. As long as he's a law abiding citizen, has all his permits, and is a loyal NRA card carrier..there's been no crime committed right? :bonk:

I don't think there should be a gun ban per se...but we definitely need to check out who these "law abiding citizens" are a little more thoroughly. Just maybe..

Why is this even in the news? A guy had some guns and saw a movie ... big whoop-dee-doo.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

I suppose it would only be newsworthy if he'd succeeded in shooting up his previous employers in their office? and maybe several innocent bystanders? What that be enough whoopdeedoo?

He even told the cops his intentions with the weapons!

Some serious changes really need to be made concerning WHO is eligible to obtain weapons. Personal protection or hunting is one thing....but obtaining these type of weapons is quite another. If they can't figure out how to curb the nutjobs obtaining mass killing machinery, they're going to have to start installing scanners at movie theaters, malls, etc., etc...

The United States CONSTITUTION the last time I checked doesn't prohibit gun ownership by your special "rules."

Maybe not the last time you checked... But that's why the founding fathers allowed changes to be made in the constitution as society changes. And things have changed a little since the late 1700s with our society. I think for the protection of innocent people (for example children and those under the age of 18) I think that the way people obtain weapons needs some serious overhaul. Unfortunately, people can't rationally discuss ANY change without people getting hauty and thinking this means a ban. There needs to be nationwide tracking in real time to keep track of what's being sold and to whom. Also, the types of weapons should be restricted. Maybe a first time gun owner can purchase handguns. Then as they prove to be responsible owners (such as not committing mass murder) then they can rank up so to speak.

The idea that a person can make their first purchase of a weapon an AK-47 and buy limitless ammunition and not get a sideways glance is unacceptable.

And by the way, any one that is a law abiding citizen cares about the welfare of others that can't defend themselves - not just their constitutional rights above all else.

I see, so you want the Government to be able to track people.

If you weren't so damn ignorant of the REASON we have the second amendment in the first place, you wouldn't dare suggest such a thing.

I didnt say the government did I? You ASSUMED I meant the government. And you know what assuming does now don't you?

I'm referring to businesses that sell weapons, modifiers to weapons, and such.

Next time, try not to assume what I'm saying.

Laws are modified to put standards of business into place to protect other law abiding citizens.

For example, you can't sell a weapon to a 12 year old. You get my point here? You can't sell weapons to convicted felons...this is a LAW. Does this go against the 2nd Amendment in your opinion?

You do realize thanks to bullshit like the Patriot Act, that this government has access to certain records already ANY TIME they want them.

Actually, every little text message you send, phone call you make, etc. it tracked by this government and words are stored as they look for "key" words.

So if you think for a moment that the government would magically let a "business" track their guns and not let them be privy to that information, you're very naive.
