Death of Southern Illinois child found in RV ruled an accident

July 23, 2012

GRANITE CITY, Ill. — An autopsy conducted Sunday confirms the shooting death of a 10-year-old Southern Illinois boy was accidental.

Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a 911 call Saturday afternoon and found the body of Christian G. Clark of Granite City. He was in a recreational vehicle in a wooded area near Dix in eastern Jefferson County.

Police said the RV is owned by Jason G. Clark, Sr. and was used as a hunting cabin. Clark’s grandchildren were in the vehicle around 3:30 p.m. Saturday when a 7-year old picked up a long gun. The weapon discharged, striking her brother. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Jefferson County Coroner.

An investigation carried out by the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services and Illinois State Police concluded the shooting was accidental. Jefferson County Sheriff Roger D. Mulch said Sunday that “all indications are that this was a tragic accident. No foul play is suspected.”
