Back to topic, my own anecdotal evidence about why this study may be correct is that while the obesity levels are a bit higher in the US, I know far more regular gym goers here in the US than I did in the UK especially among women.

Also, it seems like women in the US are far more likely to have participated in team sports at some point in their lives since their seem to be more opportunities for them to participate when they are in school.

For what it's worth.

This entire thread has been Brits countering an actual study by a respectable publication with their own silly anecdotes.

At one point, they even denied the study existed and even pretended there was no link to it!

There is no link to it. Sign up and provide us with the actual figures. The Economist website just gives their interpretation of the numbers. You do realize those aren't the actual stats, right? :bonk:

Well, I'm definitely not biased. I can't stand generalizations about certain groups of people, and being a YANK in the UK, I hear them all about Americans. Gun toting, burger gulping, crass, loud, obnoxious, fat, conceited, ignorant Americans. You name it, I've heard it here. I'm just calling it how I see it. There are sidewalks EVERYWHERE, and lovely footpaths and trails all over here. Hubby and I went for a stroll around the village last night after tea, stopped into the pub for a pint, and continued walking home and we must have passed half our neighbours doing the same. Kids were all outside playing football, riding bikes. I honestly think the weather is so terrible here, that when the sun is out everyone here is just drawn outside, because when the weather is good here, its WONDERFUL.

Oh yes, so many Brits. Try reading instead of trolling poorly, you might learn something,

Try clicking on the image noob.

Try reading. Do you think the Economist conducted this? It's from a medical journal......................... :bonk:

A NEW paper published in the Lancet on July 18th, timed to coincide with the Olympics, compares countries’ rates of physical activity. The study it describes, led by Pedro Hallal of the Federal University of Pelotas, is the most complete portrait yet of the world's busy bees and couch potatoes. Dr Hallal and his colleagues pooled data from health surveys for 122 countries, home to 89% of the world’s population. They found that 31% of adults do not get enough physical activity—defined as 30 minutes of moderate exercise five days a week, or 20 minutes of vigorous exercise three days a week, or some combination of the two. Women tend to get less exercise—34% are inactive, compared with 28% of men—but there are exceptions and regional variations, as the maps below show. Women in Russia, Croatia, Luxembourg, Greece and Iraq (to name a few) move more than their male counterparts. Malta wins the race for the most slothful nation, with 72% of adults getting too little exercise. Swaziland and Saudi Arabia slouch close behind, with 69%. In Bangladesh, by contrast, just 5% of adults fail to get enough exercise. Surprisingly, America does not live up to its sluggish reputation. Six in ten Americans are sufficiently active, compared with less than four in ten Britons. These figures are worrying. According to another paper in the Lancet, insufficient activity has about the same effect on life expectancy as smoking.

And that makes its findings inferior to your anecdotal garbage.... how?

Bite your tongue! I am an American. Born, 1971 Haverhill, Massachusetts at the Hale Municipal Hospital. Graduated high school in 1989 at Haverhill High School. Lived in Massachusetts until 1999 when I moved to NH where I lived for MOST of my adult life. I have lived in the US most of my adult life and ALL of my childhood. I lived in MISSISSIPPI for a year with my ex husband while he was in the USAF and 6 months in Texas. Compared to what I have experienced.....the UK is far more active than the US. Again I say....I AM AN AMERICAN AND PROUD TO SAY IT. I do NOT think the majority of the AMERICAN people are fat and lazy. I know the rest of the world seems to think that way...but I know its not true, but I don't think this study is accurate.

He will ignore this (again) because it doesn't fit with his weak argument.

And the injections? That had no effect in turning you British?

Definitely not British. Or English. But good job in making me blush! LMAO. American... pure at heart. I've been known to stand up in a pub with hand over heart if for some reason the Star Spangled Banner is played while the US is playing England during a televised football match (doesn't happen often). I get teased terribly but I don't care. The injections are fun though blush.gifwhistling.gifkicking.gif
