Booking Flights to US from UK

I want to book my flights over to the US (L.A) for when I move. I heard that you have to fly into New York first to cross the border and then fly internally onto L.A. Does anyone know if this is correct or not?

You must clear immigration and customs at the first port of entry in the US. So, unless you take a non-stop flight to LA you'll be going through the arrival formalities at the first airport you touch stateside. It makes no difference however, for the procedure is the same at all airports.

Fly to la direct - virgin, british airways, united... Theres quite a few. Save yourself the hassle!

Yeah you would need to clear immigration and customs at your first point of entry, in this case New York. As ClareGio says, if there is a direct flight to L.A. why not take that. Good luck!

And if you opt for a flight that isn't direct, going through New York isn't your only option for the POE. There's Washington Dulles, Atlanta, Chicago, and even Toronto. Go with whatever works best for you.
