Visajourney has been a lot helpful in our "visa journey" with K1. I had my interview last tuesday (July 17) and received the pink form and I believe it is Approved :-). Now I wonder what to do next as soon as I arrived in US Port-of-Entry? The Visajourney guide says:

1. APPLY FOR SSN

2. APPLY FOR MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE

3. GET MARRIED

4. CHANGE NAME ON SSN

CAN I APPLY FOR SSN AFTER THE WEDDING INSTEAD OF GOING BACK TO SSA OFFICE AND CHANGE MY LASTNAME????

Yes you can, as long as you do it at least 2 weeks before your I-94 expires.

You are supposed to be able to, but you may find some dimwhitted SSA employee that will tell you that now that you are married your K-1 is no longer valid (got news for them but the K-1 expired or became useless after the POE) or that the name in the SAVE database must match the name on the application. So most go in and get the SSC in the maiden name and then go back after receiving the GC to get the SSC in the married name and to remove the "VALID FOR WORK WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION" that will be on your SSC. If you are trying to save trips to the SSA then you will have troubles or at least that seems to be the case.

Good luck,

Dave

to save time, get married first within 90 days, then apply for SSN and change name, be sure to apply SSN before I-94 expires.

In our case,we waited like 2 weeks after my arrival here in US.we got married and went

to Social Security Office for SSN,the one in Toledo,OH wasn't able to give us,the lady said that they can't find my name on DHS(Dept.Homeland Security).so we went to Fremont and they did it for us but they used my maiden name on it,they said that i can only change after i had my GC (Green Card).my SSN come on mail after 1 week. I guess it depends on State where you are applying.some they will put your married name

on your SSN.some used your maiden name and do the name change after you have your GC.

goodluck guys! God Bless...

Well, you can see what we did by looking at my timeline, but we had absolutely no issues with getting the Social Security card after the marriage. It was just easier to go into the Social Security office the first time with a marriage certificate and getting the card with the married name on it. When we got it, it did say, "valid for work with DHS authorization", but we we back to the Social Security office after getting the green card to get another card without that language on it.

I did verify with Social Security that you can get a social security card AFTER getting married on a K-1 visa and I have an email from them stating this as well. I brought it in with me in case I ran into trouble, but we had no problems whatsoever. In fact, getting the SSN and card was the easiest part of the AOS process. Getting the driver's license was a big pain! It took us 5 trips to the DMV before getting it.
