N-600 or US Passport?

Hi, all. It's been a while since ROC and we're just now starting on US Citizenship.

I'm a US citizen and my wife and stepson (15 yrs-old) came to the US with K1/K2 Visas. Each have their 10-yr green cards. I'm currently putting together my wife's N-400.

Question: After she gains her US Citizenship, what's the best way to make my stepson a US Citizen, i.e., go the N-600 route or just take my wife's COC and her new US passport to the local post office or passport service center and get him a US passport? Are these two approaches the same in the eyes of the USCIS? Does he quite literally become a citizen when my wife takes her oath or only after obtaining either the COC via the N-600 or his US passport using her documents?

Also, what does the acronym 'DOS' stand for?

Much appreciated.

Yes, I actually in the same situation. I'm actively looking right now for answers here... and if it will turn out, N-600 is necessary, it would be perfect if somebody would be able to point me to some guide or example on how to fill it out correctly.

Thanks,

Oleg
