My husband is a brillian, at least in my mind :), engineer. He's had 7 years of experience in Aerospace engineering, but has a lot of knowledge and background in mechanical engineering as well (MatLab, Solid works, etc). He's been looking for about 6 months in Minneapolis, my hometown, now and has had a few phone interviews here and there, but no in-person interviews or offers, for that matter. Does anyone have any words of advice....what is the best approach for engineers that have foreign experience and are trying to find a position within the states (Minnesota in particular)? Please help!

Has he been networking with others in that industry? It's a pretty specific career path, so if he hasn't already, he should reach out to others. Also, your location may not be the best for those in that profession. When I think aerospace, I think Florida, Texas, Washington State, Washington, DC area.

Has he looked outside of MN and/or are there any hesitations/reasons against relocating to where there are more job options for his field? Has he reached out to the various universities in MN to see about becoming a visiting educator?

Most jobs in that line involve a government contract and by default that you be a USC to get the security clearance. With the current budgets many of the big companies have been laying off. Numbers 1,2 and 4 size wise have had several layoffs each in the last 12 months. Areospace is almost impossible with a green card. Has he looked into green companies ? A lot of them are using similar technologies.

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

Hmmm green companies....not sure he's looked into that. The reason we are not relocating is due to the fact that my mother is here...and I am the only child left. Also I have a great job here as well...so we really want to try and find a job for him here. The thing is he is not even looking into aerospace positions anymore, specifically for the reasons that there are not many of them here (MN)and you need to be a citizen. He's been trying to find mechanical engineering and project engineer type positions. His english is good...he still makes small mistakes, but the are minor enough to keep a conversation flowing. We are thinking about a masters program as an option. Networking is a bit challenging as I don't have any friends in that industry...I'm in the financial world and only know people from there (unfortunately).

I will definitely mention the green companies idea...as it sounds interesting. I thank you guys for replying...as looking for a job when you don't have one is a draining process for both of us :(

Aside from the engineering hotspots (at least as far as much husband's engineering niche) finding a "local" job has never been something easy. We have moved 3 times with his work. There isn't any shortage of work (again - in his niche) but we had to be willing to uproot a few times, and probably will do so again in the future.
