Israeli prime minister blames Iran for Bulgaria bomb

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday blamed Iran for a bomb blast which killed at least three people in the Bulgarian resort of Burgas and said Israel would respond.

"All the signs lead to Iran. Only in the past few months we have seen Iranian attempts to attack Israelis in Thailand, India, Georgia, Kenya, Cyprus and other places," Netanyahu said in a statement.

"Eighteen years exactly after the blast at the Jewish community center in Argentina, murderous Iranian terror continues to hit innocent people. This is an Iranian terror attack that is spreading throughout the entire world. Israel will react powerfully against Iranian terror," he said.

Buying more BP stocks...

The Israelis invented international terrorism, kidnapping, illegal rendition, etc etc

They strangled that guy in his hotel room in Dubai , shot Doctor Gerald Bull, kidnapping in south america etc etc etc etc

...and they are spreading viruses on the internet

They don't care, so what's good for the goose is good for the gander

..and now the Saudis are rolling up Syria for them using Saudi arms and the Sunnis in Syria...

So yes Iran is definitely next - straight after the election - and whoever wins

It's ok for me - I won't be going, and I own BP stocks...

This thread title is deceiving. Yes it was Iran that was responsible for that bomb blast along with a few others against Israeli embassies. It was a payback for the nuclear scientist that Mossad took care of in Iran along with one in Ukraine. So lets forget about all the Iranian arms that got funneled through Syria to Hezbollah not to mention the Palestinians. If I was Israel I would wipe Iran off the face of the map and call it square.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Bulgarian bus bombing the work of suicide bomber, minister says

(CNN) -- A bus bombing which claimed the lives of five Israeli tourists in Bulgaria was likely carried out by a male suicide attacker with a fake Michigan driver's license, Bulgaria's interior minister said Thursday.

Israel was quick to point the finger at Iran or an Islamist militant group over the attack, which occurred Wednesday in a parking lot outside Burgas Airport in Bulgaria. Tensions between Israelis and Tehran have been escalating in recent months.

Explainer: Explosion comes amid growing tension

In a strongly worded televised statement Thursday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the attack was "perpetrated by Hezbollah, Iran's leading terrorist proxy" as part of a global campaign of terror that has reached a dozen countries on five continents.

Hezbollah and Iran have been trying to create terror in countries including Kenya, India and Cyprus, as well as in the United States, where an Iranian tried to kill the Saudi diplomat, he said.

He urged world powers to expose Iran as "the premier terrorist-supporting state that it is" and prevent it from developing "the world's most dangerous weapons," a reference to its nuclear program.

"Israel is a strong country, and the Israeli people are a strong people. We will continue to fight against the terrorists and exact a heavy price from those that support them," Netanyahu vowed.

The Iranian Embassy in the Bulgarian capital, Sofia, earlier dismissed Israeli suggestions that Tehran was involved in Wednesday's attack as "unsubstantiated," and said the claim was politically motivated.

The Bulgarian bus driver and the suspected suicide bomber also died in the blast.

The identity of the man thought to have put a backpack bomb on the bus remains a mystery, but he carried a U.S. driver's license from Michigan that FBI officials say was fake, Bulgarian Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov said.

Tsvetanov said that the suspect -- who was casually dressed and appeared relaxed -- didn't stand out from other tourists on video footage from the airport.

Fingerprints are being checked and investigators are at the scene of the attack, he said, with the goal of collecting all the evidence and reopening the airport by Thursday evening local time.

Despite Netanyahu's opportunist rush to blame Iran, and then Hezbollah... (and despite some VJ members' opportunist rush to suggest immediate carpet bombing of Iran)... it seems the suspect wasn't connected to either Iran nor Hezbollah:

Bulgarian media on Thursday named the suicide bomber who blew up a bus full of Israeli tourists, killing five Israelis and a local bus driver, in the Black Sea resort of Burgas on Wednesday as Mehdi Ghezali.

There was no independent confirmation of the veracity of the information. The reports surfaced soon after Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had publicly accused Hezbollah, directed by Iran, of responsibility for the bombing. The Prime Minister’s Office made no comment on the reports.

The Bulgarian reports, rapidly picked up by Hebrew media, posited various versions of how the bomber had detonated the bomb, including the suggestion that the bomber had not intended to die in the blast, but may have wanted to place the bomb on the bus and flee.

Ghezali has a Wikipedia page, which describes him as a Swedish citizen, with Algerian and Finnish origins. He had been held at the US’s Guantanamo Bay detainment camp on Cuba from 2002 to 2004, having previously studied at a Muslim religious school and mosque in Britain, and traveled to Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, it says. He was taken into custody on suspicion of being an al-Qaeda agent, having been arrested along with a number of other al-Qaeda operatives.

Following a lobbying effort by Swedish prime minister Göran Persson, Guantanamo authorities recommended Ghezali be transferred to another country for continued detainment, and he was handed over to Swedish authorities in 2004. The Swedish government did not press charges.

He was also reportedly among 12 foreigners captured trying to cross into Afghanistan in 2009.

Earlier on Thursday the Bulgarian police released a brief video clip that claimed to show the suicide bomber, responsible for Wednesday’s terror attack on a tour bus full of Israeli citizens, walking around shortly before the blast at Burgas International Airport.

The Bulgarian news agency Sofia reported that the bomber was carrying an American passport and Michigan driver’s license, both believed to be forgeries.

Sofia also reported that the Bulgarian Interior Ministry managed to recover the fingerprints of the bomber, which they submitted to the FBI in the United States and the international police organization Interpol. The FBI and CIA joined Israeli and Bulgarian officials in investigating the attack.

Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov told Sofia that DNA tests were being run to determine the identity of the Caucasian man, who the minister described as casually dressed with nothing suspicious about his appearance to set him apart from the crowd of people at the airport.

The ministry did not indicate how the police came to the conclusion that the man was the suicide bomber.
