Tunisia bans women from wearing headscarves in public places

The Tunisian authorities have launched a campaign against the Islamic veil worn by some women to cover their hair.

Police are applying with renewed vigour a decree dating back to 1981 which prohibits women from wearing Islamic headscarves in public places.

Human rights groups describe the move as unconstitutional.

Police in Tunisia have been stopping women on the streets and asking them to remove their headscarves and sign pledges that they will not go back to wearing them.

From another source:

Tunisia's secular ruling party yesterday defended a government ban on head scarves, saying rules forbidding religious head coverings in public places in the Muslim country are designed to protect women's rights.

"If today we accept the head scarf, tomorrow we'll accept that women's rights to work and vote and receive an education be banned, and they'll be seen as just a tool for reproduction and housework," said Hedi Mhenni, general-secretary of the dominant Constitutional Democratic Rally (RCD) party.

What about the women who WANT to wear it?

That's like saying what about children who want to work as child labor, or what about people who want to be slaves?

Whoa, there! Quite a big jump from wearing an article of clothing to slave labor, no?

What it represents to you may not be what it represents to a woman who CHOOSES to wear one.

It'll be interesting to see how Muslims react to this, & compare & contrast with the French ban.

The article of clothing represents a belief system that is just as insidious and harmful as slavery.

Saddened, that a civilized nation like ours allows atrocities like that on its soil.

How is covering one's head an atrocity?

Yaaaaay, I'm an atrocity!

I know my scarf represents my submission to God and worship of Him. It also represents my bad attitude :D
