Hi Everyone,

I have been told by a few people that when I move, my unaccompanied personal items and household items must travel on the same day that I do. Is this true?

I've hired movers to drive my things to the US this September and am now trying to figure out my flight plans. Is it okay if my movers drive my things down 1 day before I fly to the US?

So confused!

Can anyone confirm or correct this?! Thanks so much!

Grace

You can't ship your belongings before your POE because the movers need a copy of your visa after it is activated. So they can bring it over.

Thanks for your input! Hmm, I still wonder about the "same day" scenario. If I fly out and have the movers take my items on the same day, I wonder if this would work. My moving company (MoveBuilder) has only told me to provide copies of my visa/passport/proof of immigration etc to the driver and it should be okay. If I end up flying out before my items are taken by the movers, I really won't have anyone to help oversee the whole process with the movers - which is unfortunate. Also, how would I send a copy of my "activated" visa to the movers if I'm on route and on a plane! lol. I wish moving over the border was a tad bit easier.

Any personal stories of moving from Canada to the US with unaccompanied items would be great to read and gather advise from!

Thank you VJ.

AS Ont stated, NOT before you POE!! You could POE, then find a fax machine somewhere and fax the required info to the movers

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1
