I think we'd all benefit from better government stats regarding legal vs illegal gun owners. I think everyone might be surprised by the difference. Then we could have a rational discussion on how to keep the firearms in the hands of the legals and out of the hands of the illegals.

Do you have a reading comprehension problem?

I said, QUITE CLEARLY, that guns ILLEGAL OR LEGAL are used for WRONG more than they're used for RIGHT.

What part of that is difficult? Where'd I lose you? Where did you get "Legal gun owners are committing the crimes" from?

I said I wished all legal gun owners were good citizens like the man in the original story. Unfortunately, they are not.

Thats likely not true, with so many people owning firearms in the US there are lots opportunities to use them for "right" be it defending yourself, hunting, land management, sport etc. These are all "right" uses.

Right now I bet there are at least 1000 hunters in the wild.

Two dogs attacked by a bear in town this week alone. The wife sewed one up last night and it's on it's way to Anchorage to a veterinary clinic the other dog is deader than a door nail. Most all of us pack guns around here for safety. Many people here live off of subsistence which means fish and game. No hunting for some people means they don't eat.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Gun violence is a major issue in the United States - whether the guns are legally obtained or not. So for all those people who come out the hero at the end of the day by defending themselves or their homes, there are plenty more who used it to terrorize someone, murder someone, kill someone, whatever.

Like I said, unfortunately, people who obtain these guns for the right uses do end up using them for the wrong ones.

It's sad, but it's inevitable and there's hardly a way to control it if guns are so easy to get.

Agreed more has to be done to keep guns away from the thugs.

here

But never did I say it was only legal gun owners, did I? No. I don't believe I did. Some of them are legal gun owners who have a bad day. Some of them are illegal gun owners who got the gun for the sole purpose of causing harm.

If we could guarantee that only men like the one in the story would obtain guns, or that only people who are smart enough to use them properly, we'd have no issues. But sadly, they fall into the wrong hands illegally or legally and we're in the mess we're in now because of it.

People with legal firearms snap and kill their families, coworkers, neighbors, strangers every day.

you didn't say both legal and illegal. you said legal. didn't you? yes, you did.

I think you need to understand the shear magnitude of proper firearm use in this nation and then look back at these stats. I'm 100% for better record keeping because I suspect we'll find that legal owners are a small minority of the crime factor. Most of these people acquire firearms through states that have loose gun laws i.e.. they buy 50 handguns and walk out then sell them.

Does your comment invalidate mine? No. Guns, illegal or legal, are used for wrong far more than they're used for right.

I made this comment almost directly afterwards. I said legal guns are used for crime every day. Is that not a fact? That doesn't equate to "legal gun owners are the ones committing the gun crime" at all.

hey you're the one that said

you wouldn't have anything to back this one either would you?

i didn't think so.

btw: that invalidates your comment. carry on w/ the anti-gun hysteria.

You are still probably safer there than the streets of Chicago!

No its not a fact. We lack the stats to determine if its true.

You couldn't pay me enough to live in a big city in the lower 48. I'l take rednecks and bear over ghetto thugs any day of the week.

Okay, you're clearly not understanding me. Or you're purposefully being difficult.

I absolutely said that legal gun owners snap and kill their families, coworkers, etc every day. It's a fact. It happens. Guns that were supposed to be used for "self defense" often get used for something else. I said if only all legal gun owners were like the one in the story. They aren't.

I also said that illegal guns are a problem.

I don't like guns personally, but I am NOT against other people having guns. If only they always got used for their intended purpose. Unfortunately, they do not.

What are you arguing with me about, exactly?

No its not a fact. We lack the stats to determine if its true.

True, there are no exact numbers. But I find it hard to believe that of the crime that takes place in the US every day, all the guns used are illegal.
