Why do things get so damn ugly around here?

I’m quoting one of my friends here with the “why do things get so damn ugly around here?”

There are some great people here that I truly adore and love. Now, I can’t cast any stones because I have engaged my own not so unflattering exchanges. However, some of you have just taken things severely out of context and to a downright hurtful and attacking level. Of course, you are entitled to express yourselves anyway that you see fit, but it just appears that some of you have gone way overboard with this I’m just expressing my opinion business when replying to someone’s post (especially in the Off Topic section). It’s no wonder so many arguments ensue because most of you claim to not want to fight but engage your comment(s) so aggressive or rude that many people feel insulted. Most of the times, we’re worse on members than we are on trolls.

Things egt ugly because it's VJ - That's just the way it is.

There's no way in an open forum of 1000's of members it's going to be the freaking promise land utopia...it's life, it's differing personalities, it's people bored at work, it's people stressed over immigration, it's just VJ.

We love it, that's why we're all here

Finally finished with immigration in 2012!

Hmmm, I wonder who will be the first one to tell Uling to stop telling other people how to post. Or to tell him that life isn't all lollipops and rainbows, you know. Or to tell him that they're sick of his whining. It's only a matter of time...

I think it has more to do with the way the reader interprets the statements, There are no facial expressions to go along with the written words! leaving the reader to put their own emotion to the statements.

the smilies do help convey the emotion.

some of you have just taken things severely out of context and to a downright hurtful and attacking level.

Why do things get ugly around here?

As you said, "some have been downright hurtful and attacking".

Maybe it's because we all spend time trying to help each other and provide wise, experienced advice and words of wisdom. And as a thank you for taking the time and energy to help, we are told "I told you so - kiss my bumper" and then called "my bitches" by ungrateful, nasty people.

It doesn't matter if you think we are uptight. Adults don't generally respond to helpful people in a nasty, obnoxious way (while continuing to post questions that could easily be answered by simply reading the guides).

When that happens, things get nasty.

Bottom line, people can post whatever the hell they want. But it's wise to be prepared for the consquences.

First of all, things get ugly because we are all at our wits end and most of us are thousands of miles away from the one person that can calm down.

Secondly, making posts about drama causes more drama.

Because there are some very strong personalities present. There are those who must be right, and always need the last word. There are those who live for the drama, and will post for no other reason than to antagonize. There's the ones who want to be helpful to others. There's the ones who act like they want to be helpful to others, but really just want to pile it on in that smart alec-y kind of way. There are ones who will automatically agree with what another posts, just cause. There are ones who just post for the heck of it because it's fun. Then there are ones who really don't care. That's why VJ is how it is.

Don't let the sunshine spoil your rain...just stand up and COMPLAIN!

There is nothing like a good old fashioned debate. It can get heated, but it doesn't have to get personally insulting.

But as the old saying goes...if you can't stand the heat...get out of the kitchen! ;)

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

US Congresswoman Barbara Jordan (D-TX)

Testimony to the House Immigration Subcommittee, February 24, 1995
