SSN is not important for AOS, you can file without it. But you will need it prior to applying to work.

You can't even get your SSN after your i-94 expires. You're supposed to be able to gt it once the EAD is in hand, but some have run in trouble until they get the green card. And by trouble I mean people at Social Security office not allowing them to get the SSN.

Hello VJ members,

I would like to know if it is okay not to get a SSN while in the AOS.. I am planning to get SSN upon receiving my EAD and start applying for a job. Is SSN is really important during AOs process? Pls give me some reply.Thanks for advance.God bless us all..

Yes, you can use your EAD to go an apply for your SSN. You need both the SSN and EAD to work.

It will be 6 weeks this coming Friday since I applied for my SSN. Im so annoyed at the waiting. Ive been told to wait until 8 weeks before going back because thats how New Jersey works. I cant even get my driving license without it :(

That can't be right. I would go here: http://www.ssa.gov/pgm/reach.htm and shoot the SSA an email explaining your situation and ask them about why NJ is making you wait so long when others get theirs within 7-10 days.

Wow. Hmm..maybe call and get a live person to talk to? Sorry you are having a hard time getting your SSN. Hope you get it straightened out and receive it soon.

Yes it's okay. I filed AOS without SSN, I just sent EAD application couple weeks ago, 3 months after CSC took my AOS application which gonna take forever. I'm hoping to get EAD before GC and can't wait to apply for SSN.

Me: Irish/ Swiss citizen, and now naturalised US citizen. Husband: USC; twin babies born Feb 08 in Ireland and a daughter in Feb 2010 in Arkansas who are all joint Irish/ USC. Did DCF (IR1) in 6 weeks via the Dublin, Ireland embassy and now living in Arkansas.
