One of my spouse's parents just entered the U.S. after being approved for a green card. We have heard conflicting things about how long it takes the green card to be delivered to our address after that entry -- we have heard 4 to 6 weeks, 30 to 90 days, and 4 to 6 months.

The problem is they need to return to their home country two months from now. How long does it usually take for the green card to show up after entering the U.S.? And, if it takes longer than 2 months from now and they have to leave before the green card shows up in the mail, what happens when they need to come back in (and are a legal permanent resident but don't have the green card in hand)?

The green card time frame varies. For me, it took 19 days. Most people I've seen receive it within a month or two. Although, in the situation you're asking, it doesn't really matter. The visa and stamp in their passport acts as a temporary green card for up to a year. So, if the time comes for them to visit their home country and their green card hasn't arrived yet, it won't be a problem as long as they use their passport with the visa and stamp in it.
