Who is asking you for an I94?

If you entered on a CR1 you should have an I551 stamp in your passport that is dated, that should passify the SSA if that is what you are talking about.

Good luck

Thanks. We just figured that out.

I was trying to get a non-driver ID card and told I had to produce an I94

My kind husband reviewed the docs later and figured out it was the I551 so we're good to go.

I just need to wait til my SSN arrives.

Isn't it fun being a new arrival. Can't even open a bank account here yet.

One day at a time and pray like crazy!

That's not true. Chase Bank requires a SSN. At least here in NY they did.

I was repeatedly refused an account with my husband's credit union. They seem totally put off dealing with any non-US citizen. The Bank Manager actually asked me for my US Passport. I quietly mentioned that I would have to be a US Citizen to have such an item... or at least a permenant resident as opposed to a conditional permanent resident. She had to think about that.

Good News is that I got my SSN last night and can now go to the DMV for that ID. With that she can't refuse to open the accounts. Hate hiding large sums of money for this long, but at least I THINK I have everything in place now LOL.

Or an ITIN.

what is an ITIN?

Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN)- not everyone will have a social right away but one can file taxes with that initially before getting a social.

Wachovia/Wells Fargo wouldn;t let me open a bank account eitehr initially - don;t take it too hard, they're just uneducated when it comes to dealing with immigration stuff - you little foreigner, you!

Yup, what Udella&Wiz said: an individual taxpayer ID. I got one for my husband so we could file taxes jointly before he arrived in the US, and that's what we originally used to add him to my Chase account. I think we had an easy time with our bank because we live in a major city with lots of other immigrants. Seems like banks in places with smaller immigrant populations don't know what they're doing (like asking an immigrant for a US passport...geez...*facepalm*). Your Canadian passport + SSN/ITIN should be sufficient.

This is not true, you need to have an SSN or a tax id number. I currently work in banking and have for 5+ years. I have seen some banks do it without however, but is not usually the procedure taken.

I got a VA DL, opened bank acct with no SSN. But you soon learn that everything varies from state to state, from bank branch to bank branch. Not very much "United" in United States in many instances

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1
