Teen charged with killing father, stepmother in Nash County

WHITAKERS, N.C. -- A teenager is charged in the murders of his father and stepmother.

Jacob Whitfield, 17, is in the Nash County jail on two counts of first degree murder.

Whitakers Police Chief Chris Wagstaff said officers went to a home at 503 Taylor Street about 11:30 p.m. Saturday after a 911 call that two people had been shot. When officers arrived, they discovered the bodies of the couple who lived there – Brian and Charisma Whitfield.

Officers also found Jacob Whitfield, his friend, and Whitfield's younger brother, who is 10 years old or younger.

Neighbor Freddie Blackmon said he spoke with that child shortly after the murders.

"I asked him how he was doing and he said he was upstairs when he heard gunshots and then he came down and found both of them dead on the first floor," Blackmon said.

Caroline Frazier and Brandi Aycock said they went to school with Jacob Whitfield at Northern Nash High School when he wasn't living with his mother in Virginia.

"Every time I saw him at school, he didn't really have a lot of friends or people to talk to, but I didn't know him that well," Frazier said.

"He always had that odd feeling about him, like I don't know, he was just real weird and he never seemed the type to do something like that," Aycock said.

The couple was married three and a half years, according to a posting Charisma made on visajourney.com. Multiple neighbors verified the pictures on the site were of the couple.

On the site, Charisma, who is from the Philippines, listed her interests. Among them, "…most of all spend my time with my husband and his family!!"

According to a neighbor and the birth date listed on the site, Charisma Whitfield was killed on her 31^st birthday.

Brian Whitfield was a nurse, according to neighbors.

"I hate something like this to happen to anybody, especially someone I knew," said Donnie Frazier, a neighbor who had helped Brian Whitfield with some yard work in the past.

"It puts everything into perspective. Each day you just don't know what tomorrow holds for anybody," he said.

Police have not yet released the 911 call made, nor identified the caller publicly.

Whitfield is being held without bond. Whitfield's first court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday morning.
