1 Year Exchange, 1 Year Work? HRR?

So I'm looking into doing a J-1 student exchange through my university.. and they give scholarships and all that stuff for the students who go on the exchanges, which I'm assuming will make me subject to the 2 year home residency requirement, right?

How difficult is it to get a No Objection statement from the government? As I would like to do a J-1 1 year working visa program almost right after doing a 1 year university exchange.

Has anyone done this? I've been trying to get an answer from everywhere, but no one can give me one. Even my university exchange co-ordinator seems to not know anything on the visas as she can't seem to answer my questions..

I just want to know that if I do the 1 year J-1 exchange, that I will be able to get a No Objection statement and then do a 1 year working visa.. And both without the 2 year HRR. As after that I'd go and work in Canada (I just got back almost a year ago from 18 months in Canada on a working holiday, and I'd love to go again).

Also would be moving my dog with me to the US/Canada which is another reason I'm hoping to extend my time in North America for as long as possible as I wouldn't want to subject him to have to return to Australia with me with the high cost of bringing a dog to Australia and the quarantine time :(

Any help?

JesseJames, To the best of my knowledge you are only subject to the HRR if you are directly funded by government money or if you are doing medical studies or if you will be getting put on a "shortage of skills" list for Australia. I would consult with the consulate on whether or not they'll put a 2 year HRR on your J-1 Visa. If you get a degree in the US while on a J-1 you'll be able to get 9-12 months practical training, by extending you J-1. If not subject to HRR you'll be able to get a work visa through your employer anyways. Getting a No Objection waiver is very difficult--chances are very low you'll be granted one.
