Hi everyone,

We have finally been approved and are now starting to put the wheels in motion to make presumably the biggest move of our lives ( Australia to USA).

I need to know more about health insurance in the US, particularly Seattle, WA. I have secured a job with an Australian based company who want me to start their us operation however I will be paid in us dollars and need to get health Insurance/ medical insurance for my whole family (employer will pay).

My questions are:

Who is the best provider in that area?

Generally what is the annual cost for a family of five (3 depend ants under 15)

Can we buy health insurance if I am not a us citizen?

Do I need my Ssn before we get insurance?

What did you do ( as a new immigrant) when you first got to the US in terms of insurance?

Any advice would be welcome.

Thanks in advance

Regarding health insurance that will be given to you once you are a permanent employee of a company in the us. Usually they have a booklet where there is a list of dentists and mds that you can contact so I really don't know if you can get a health insurance of your own outside of the company you are working with. You have to talk with the human resources of the company to give you a health insurance where it will include your kids and husband if he doesnot have a job of his own. But first the essentials - state id or driver's licence, then SSN plus authority to work- GC or as a USC... these are the things that you need to work... also there is a death insurance too- it's about US$10,000 if ever you die... for the other stuff like pension and where to invest talk it over with your co- workers as well as the HR... with minor kids i think their health is really an important matter that you really need to have an insurance. Food is not really a big deal plus gas and a second hand car plus apt rent, garbage, mowing of the ground fees- i can say that one parent working full time may be ok... but if both of you work the better..the kids can go to school for free- prim/elem/secondary- plus there are meals provided for them- free lunch-... so i hope the rules didn't change otherwise explore explore more...

From what you've written, it looks as if you will be starting a new outpost of the Australian-based company. Is the goal to have more employees, or will you be the sole employee in the US? If the goal is to build out the business more, then you should start looking at companies that can manage that process for you as well as any human resources-type issues like ADP or Insperity.

In the short term, the insurance options in the US can vary wildly based on how much one is willing to pay. Will your employer be paying for all insurance costs, or will you be required to contribute? You should check out the Pro Benefits site, which gives you a rundown of options in the Seattle area along with a FAQ on health insurance terms: http://probenefitswa.com/.
