By Alexander Abad-Santos | The Atlantic Wire – Thu, Jul 12, 2012

It's not Ralph Lauren's silly berets or the double-breasted jackets, which the U.S. athletes will don during the opening ceremony of London's Olympic Games, that are rubbing House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi the wrong way. It's the fact that they weren't American made. "They should be wearing uniforms that are made in America," Pelosi was quoted as saying in a report by National Journal's Elahe Izadi. As we told you yesterday, it's been revealed that Ralph Lauren, like they did four years ago, commissioned the U.S.'s opening ceremony outfits to be made in China. Which is sad considering the deeper meaning that these uniforms are meant to convey. Because Pelosi can never shake her political profile, there's also that angle, as Izadi mentions, the Ralph Lauren-China discovery happened to pop up the same week that House Democrats are ramping up their two-year-old "Make It In America" initiative which promotes American manufacturing.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Could one of the mods erase the "By Undocumented Workers" on the topic title please. :)

I was thinking US textile industry, Pelosi, and Dream Act and somehow that got into the topic title.

I suspect this is supported by many on both sides of the aisle. I try to buy American wherever possible, and the BF is a stickler for it when it comes to clothes. And I have to say, he looks pretty great in his made-to-measure 100% made in the USA shirts and trousers. :)

Buy American! (with no irony)

Buy American unless it cost 3 times more that a comparable imported item. The market place dictate supply and demand.

It's too late to change the uniforms since the olympics is two weeks away. They promise to change it to US made uniforms for the winter games in 2014. How ironic the US team will be representing the US and wearing outsourced uniforms - putting the issue of outsourcing front and center.

Many countries pay for the uniforms themselves unlike the US. This is just another example of private corporations and their lovely ethics (or lack there of).

Maybe we should have the corporations come up with their own version of a pledge of allegiance. They are now people too according to the repub majority on SCOTUS. An honest pledge by them would be to dollars, especially the ones in their own pockets!

Nancy Pelosi: U.S. Olympic Uniforms Should Be Made in the U.S.A.

This wouldn't have been a topic if only the modern Summer Olympics encouraged athletes to compete in the nude just as the ancient olympics in Greece promoted athletic nudity for aesthetic appreciation. Just imagine Christina Vukicevic, Tyson Chandler, Maria Sharapova, Giuseppe Lanzone and James Magnussen bare it all in the name of sports, not just for a magazine spread.
