Hi everyone, my name is Andrei. I am Maryna's husband (posting under her ID).

We got married two weeks ago (she came on a K1 visa), and we are ready to mail all of our paperwork for AOS this Monday.

Here is a situation.

An acquaintance of mine (girl) called and asked me to sign affidavit of support for her green card as well. I would like to help, but I don't know how great the risk is.

What is my financial risks? What is the worst possible scenario? Can I sponsor a friend while I am sponsoring my wife?

A little background on her. She stayed in United States illegally about 4 years ago. Married a US citizen about three years ago. Only now three years later, they are getting around to filing some paperwork for her to adjust her status and make her legal. Her husband is unemployed on and off, and can't really hold a job for long, so he does not qualify to sponsor her. So she is asking me.

As I said, if possible, I would like to help, but I am not willing to jeopardize my family's future.

What should I do? Thank you so much,

Andrei

DON'T DO IT! Your friend has already shown that she has disregard for laws. Her husband's employability is unstable. If she divorces her husband and needs additional support while here YOU WILL BE ON THE HOOK FOR HER. If she ever gets public aid and it's found out you will be responsible for paying it back.

Why isn't he asking someone in his family to help sponsor her? DON'T DO IT! BIG RED FLAGS!!!

Read the sponsor's contract at the end of the I-864 form. That's your liability.

Worst case scenario: friend uses means tested benefits and the agency looks to you for repayment because the husband can't pay.

You can sponsor her; you can sponsor as many immigrants as your income allows.

Whether it is a good idea is a whole different thing that the others have addresses already.

No, no! She has a husband, right? His employment/unemployment it's their problem. Same as sponsorship. He has family/parents/friends then that's who HE should ask to help with sponsorship. You have enough of your own expenses and headaches with bringing and settling your wife in US :wacko:

I agree with other posters. Don't do it. It is too much of responsibility, especially when you are just starting the new life. You already sponsoring your wife!!!
