Earlier this week [1] I wrote about the long-standing hope of Democrats that demographic changes are working in their favor and will soon create a durable national Dem majority. There are several moving parts to this theory, but the two big ones are (a) young people are trending Democratic, and (b) the Dem-leaning nonwhite population is getting bigger and bigger. As far as I know, Republicans don't really deny that these things are happening. After all, the trend in the youth vote jumps out in every poll, and the growing nonwhite share of the population is regularly front-page news. George Bush and Karl Rove, who desperately wanted to pass a comprehensive immigration bill in 2006 in order to stanch the flow of Hispanic votes into the Democratic column, knew perfectly well how important this was.

So what's the Republican response to all this? They have two options:

  1. Start to move leftward on social issues, especially gay marriage, in order to win back their share of the youth vote; tone down the anti-immigration rhetoric from the tea partiers; and stop tolerating casual racism among their core supporters.
    or
  2. Double down on the demographic groups who already support them. This is basically the South, angry white men, the rich, and the elderly.

Eventually, they might be forced to adopt Option 1, but for now they seem to have abandoned the idea of pushing back against their base (as Democrats eventually did in the late '80s), and instead have gone all in on Option 2. There are two elements to this. The first is to push ever harder for higher turnout among the Fox News set. That was pretty successful in 2010, when the "enthusiasm gap" powered a Republican landslide that year.

Thing is it might work this time

Then in 2016 they will be out-bred forever

However, given the situation in the swing states, Barry is looking home and dry

BUT he needs Congress in order to do anything and that is doubtful - so its another 4 year stalemate with healthcare coming in as the crowning glory - so 2016 should be easy for the Democrats

Cant see the 2016 candidate yet though... I wonder if Romney will change parties ?

Didn't Charles! already close this discussion, and instruct the membership not to restart it?

I don't like threads being hacked and false topics being set up - and I don't like Charles's name being taken in vain

If you can't post sensibly, go back to sitting in the window sill pulling the wings off flies or whatever you were doing

Anyway, a comment on the thread subject if the party boys (and gals) don't mind

Anyone who tried to gerrymander an election in other countries would lose that election immediately

How come people can get away with it here ?

Why are the electorate so tolerant of it ?

thread has been reviewed and is considered different in scope than the other thread that was locked.

should the bickering start again in this one, it too will wind up like it's distant cousin.

Oh Mother Jones, ignorance speaks volumes yet again... and of course our illegal immigrant apologist started this thread in response as well.

tone down the anti-immigration rhetoric from the tea partiers;

Don't you mean Anti-ILLEGAL-immigration rhetoric? No one is against immigration. Just against those who violate this nations sovereignty.

and stop tolerating casual racism among their core supporters.

Oh I would love to know what MJ defines as 'casual racism' - From what I see on the left racism is "What? You don't support this law Obama signed? You're a fvcking racist bigot son of a......" --- and yeah, that's how deranged the left is these days trying to make everything out to be racist.

and as far as voter IDs go as I've said before. I can walk into a polling place, use my neighbors name if he's registered and vote. It's that easy. You'd be damn surprised by the amount of 'comfortable' illegal immigrants that will actually vote using the alias of a 'friend' or whomever's identity they have stolen and how tarnished the system really is.

I suppose you are only talking about the country you used to call home. Elections are rigged the around the world, if you believe the headlines.

One party rule. The red and blue parties are interchangeable for the most part.

I have the experience of counting at UK elections. I don't remember any voter suppression in the UK

perhaps you have other information ?

This system in the UK is that everyone MUST register to vote at their residence as at 31st October

A card is then sent to their house telling them when the election is and the card is taken to the voting station

Where I live in Wisconsin there is NO Notification of an election !!

All you get is right wing fake calls saying the election has already been held and there is no need to vote

The election system in the US is a twisted corrupt disgrace and that is without discussing ID's

You are referring to persons of an ancestry different to mine in a small area inhabited almost exclusively by his ethic group.

He brought the customs of his home country with him as far as election fraud is concerned.

His attempt at overcoming the election system of his host nation failed and he was kicked out

I still think that Wisconsin should send out voting cards and jail people who make fraudulent phone calls about the date of the election.

Government ID is not required in the UK but the penalties for trying to vote twice are heavy

blah blah blah. Fraud in a UK election. End of story.

Now back on topic. Barack Hussein Obama seems to have a problem with voters having to show a valid picture ID in order to vote.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

You wish - everything is so simplistic to right wingers - you are wrong with a capital W , the British electoral system is safer and better and encourages more citizens to vote - so that's the end of that

Lots of people don't have photo id

Most of those are black/Hispanic/poor

Just the kind of people that you people want to block. You hate more people voting because you know the result.

Its disgraceful and an insult to the constitution

People who try and prevent US Citizens from voting should be jailed

People who make phone calls to minorities saying no need to vote because the election happened yesterday - they should be jailed too. They would in the UK

I think a 10 year minimum with no parole would be appropriate

..and the loss of their guns for life

A second offense should see them sent to Afghanistan for 40 years to maintain their sewage system - without pay

Unless everyone here was born yesterday we all got a good look at the riots in the UK last year so please spare us the bs.

Get a valid picture ID and vote. It's that simple. No rocket science involved.
