Suicide Note Leads to Dismembered Body Above Voodoo Shop

NEW ORLEANS — Police discovered the remains of a 26-year-old woman dismembered and cooked in her French Quarter apartment after her boyfriend leapt to his death from a hotel with a confession note in his pocket, police said Wednesday.

Police spokesmen confirmed that the woman's body was found Tuesday night, dismembered, in her apartment above a voodoo shop on the edge of the Quarter.

The New Orleans Times-Picayune and WWL-TV quoted unidentified police sources Wednesday as saying the woman's charred head was in a pot on the stove, her legs and feet were baked in the oven and the rest of her dismembered body had been placed in a trash bag in the refrigerator.

The grisly discovery came after a man jumped from seventh-floor of the Omni Royal Hotel in the French Quarter on Tuesday night. Police on the scene found a five-page note detailing the location of the woman's body and an out-of-state contact, according to the Times-Picayune. Police said the note indicated she was killed on Oct. 5.

Police spokesman Officer Gary Flot confirmed the body was dismembered but released no other details. Police and the coroner's office declined to release the identities of the couple, saying family members had not yet been notified.

The Times-Picayune identified the woman as Adrian "Addie" Hall and the man as Zackery Bowen. Both had been bartenders in the city prior to Hurricane Katrina, opting to weather the storm in the French Quarter.

The couple was featured in several national newspapers in the days following the storm. The New York Times reported on Sept. 9, 2005, that Hall would ensure police patrols outside their apartment by flashing passing patrol cars.

The pair burned downed limbs for cooking fires and fashioned fly swatters from plates and coat hangers, according to the Newhouse News Service.

"We're having a civilized hurricane," Hall told a Mobile Register reporter, to whom she offered a cocktail and cigarette.

A woman who identified herself as Priestess Miriam in the Voodoo Spiritual Temple and Cultural Center below the apartment said Wednesday the couple had only recently moved in the North Rampart Street apartment on the outskirts of the historic neighborhood.

"You see people and never know what's going on with them," the woman said, noting she didn't know the couple very well.

The man's suicide occurred at a luxury hotel on St. Louis Street in a part of the French Quarter frequented by tourists, several blocks from where the woman's body was found in a weathered peach-colored building across from Louis Armstrong Park.

The area has an eclectic mix of residences and businesses including bars, the voodoo shop and a tattoo parlor.

Joy Spaulding, owner of the nearby Nawlin's Flava Cafe said the couple frequented her restaurant. "To be honest, they seemed like a real nice couple. They were good-looking people, young people trying to do something with their lives," she said.
