It's CRAZY to say it but I have heard BAD stories from people who hire attorneys for immigration processes! I participate in a group for Brazilians with K visas on facebook and a girl there received many wrong infos from her attorney.

She was "saved" by the girls in the group who have been through the process. They explained what was right and wrong and she had TIME to fix the forms.

Her K1 visa is almost done and she found out FROM ME that after getting married she would have to start AOS process!! Her attorney didn't tell her that!

If you don't have a RED FLAG, u don't need an attorney. It's very simple! There are websites like VJ to help people, the USCIS website has all the forms available for ANYONE! The process is stressful, but SOME (not every) attorneys just want to make easy money and get too many cases. Which make difficult for them to do a good job.

In my opinion: NO ONE CARES MORE ABOUT YOUR PROCESS THAN YOURSELF. You are capable to do it.

Good luck, God bless you!

Great advice Rebeca,

Thanks, I appreciate it. I wish I had that advice before I thought of hiring an Immigration Attorney. Biggest waste of money and time ever.

Take care,

oh no :( this scares me now :( we're do hire a lawyer to process our paper.. and i sure will hate it if our lawyer will fool us since i told my husband not to hire a lawyer and better we do it on our own.. but he's worried about this whole visa processing thats why he hire someone.. but this lawyer was been recommended by my husband's friend.. but thats not their lawyer, thats a colleague of their lawyer... geezz... i hope it wont happen to us... other wise we sure file a complain to this lawyer :(

Hi nate and riyn,

If you can talk your fiancee out of hiring an attorney I would do it now.

If not, I would refuse to pay the full fee up front. Agree to pay a maximum of half the fee up front. If the attorney refuses, tell your fiancee that is a red flag.

Once the attorney has all your money, they know they have you wrapped around their finger and can treat you as they please and give you whatever level of lousy service and bad advice and stress as they want to.

Best of luck,

I am sorry for what you endured. But I got to say KUDO's to you Sir. I read this last night and LOL'd all the way home. You got it man. Loved it. Your words and your kick a@# attitude sorry for the "dragon lady".

I find it so interesting because I have a few friends who used lawyers and every last one of them are in AP, denied, NOIR or totally rejected. All got RFE's and much attitude from lawyers. Lawyers didn't prepare them for interviews. Basically clueless. And some were going through Lagos. Like are you serious. So I applaud you sire way to go.:dancing:

Hi dwheels76,

Thanks for your reply and thanks so much for your kind words, praise and encouragement.

I really do appreciate it.

Gotta try and laugh when you get into a bind. No use adding more misery to a bad experience. Glad I made you laugh.

Take care,

Every State Bar has a phone number which you can contact to file a claim against attorneys. If you think that some rules of professional conduct were violated, you are welcome to call them and let them know. Copy of the emails would be very good evidence. Same with the scammer (provided that he is an attorney, otherwise the State Bar can't do anything but you would have a fraud case against him).

Hi newlyweds2010,

Thanks for the info.

There is also a good Complaint Board online. That's where I found out the first attorney I used was a scam artist.

At first I only had the name of his company. I didnt' get his full name until after I hired him.

When he overcharged my credit cards I researched him by name online and discovered the scam horror stories.

Loser lawers who don't give a Rat's a*ss about anyone and betray the trust of the people who hired them to provide them with help, get what they deserve in time. They're stuck being themself in their loser lawyer little body.

They know the scum they are so they are their own punishment.

Even if I take no action, the lawyer has what she deserves, she's stuck with her mind, character and personality.

Thanks again,

I hired an Attorney the first time which was a waste of time. They asked for way too many documents and drove me crazy. I did this K1 myself and actually thought I was missing something because I sent in so little compared to last time. But when I look at the checklist this great sight offers I am right on.... I think lol.. I also find this time around that my relationship with my fiancee is much better than previous. I atribute some of this to both of use contributing to this process and following as a couple.

I believe the only time one needs an Attorney is it all other avenues have been exhausted.

Good luck on the rest of your journey! Sounds like a good move firing your attorney.

Take care

Thanks for the support LSnBigBear,

Yes, firing my attorney has taken a huge burden off my shoulders. No more worrying about the next attack email from her. No more stress.

Best advice anyone could have given me is: Don't hire an Immigration Attorney. Second best advice I could have gotten is: Fire your attorney as soon as you can.

Take care,

I'm so sorry, it sucks when you just want to do all this process right and people just wanna take advantage of you. But don't worry Karma will get her/him lol. Besides you have all the VJ's members to help you, good luck on the rest of your process!

Hi CameronAndLuisa,

Thanks for your kind words of support.

Yes, you're right, the good people on this forum make hanging in there during tough times that much more doable.

There will always be creeps, crooks and as*sholes in this world. The good people out there make it easier to keep keeping on in spite of them.

I do appreciate all the good people on this forum.

Thanks to everyone else who replied to my post.

I appreciate the replies and support very much.

Thats so cool and this is the one thing so many people don't ask whe they seek a lawyer. Thet see "immigration lawyer" and they think they know immigration. And really what we all need is a "embassy specific lawyer". Because those of us (Lagos for my husband) going through tough Embassies know you have to know what you know about the embassy and frankly most of us know our SO's embassy better than any lawyer would. Cuz what happens in Canada and UK well just won't fly in Lagos, the MENA's or Islamabad. So its great you have peeps that look out for folk and who knows.

I still say that although its great our SO's get a VISA in the end. Us the Petitioner should recieve a deree in Immigration Affairs or Doctorate in Embassy protocol. Goodness. (sorry I am babling).

They work as a team. She is Filipina, knows the culture, speaks the language. They include all the phone support needed, even to the person overseas. They have been to the embassy and know the area. They do more then just fill out the forms.

Hi JaMeMa,

Thanks for your sympathy.

Yes, you are right; there are good lawyers out there. But I would not again want to have to lose my money on 10 of them to find that 1 kind, nice, warm and fluffy caring one who won't rip me off and waste my time.

Take care,

I believe lawyers who rip people off do so because they want to do so. Maybe it's an adrenaline rush thing or a "I feel so powerful and like such a winner now".

Loser lawyers who take advantage of people that come to them for help = Desperate misrable crooks wanting everyone else to be just as desperate and miserable in life as they are.

Not to be mean or anything, but hey, I have a right to b*tch now if I want. I already paid for it... twice.

Okay, no more lawyer bashing for me now. Time to be nice.

No matter what kind of lawyer....you get what you pay for. Unless your just lucky enough to fall into the lap of a decent rookie.

And there is no way I would hire an attorney that I couldn't go see face to face...i.e. www.lawyer.com

I've had a great experience with all of my attorney's but they all come recommended and I still interview them before retaining.

Good luck getting back on track!
