Do you have a stamp in your passport(I-551)? Either mail them through their webpage and take the answer with you when you go in to fill out an application, or simply visit a different SSA and hand in your application. That is your proof of being LPR/permanent resident.

stop using the telephone with SSA - they are mostly idiots.

You need a different set of idiots, alas..

Get into your local SSA office with yer passport and fill out a SSA-5 form,

then ask the clerk to look you up in the SAVE database using yer VISA name .

If not found with the VISA name, ask to be looked up in the VISA NUMBER.

If not found, stop. Retract your application from the clerk's fingers,

and come back in a week, try again.

Good Luck !

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

Crazy is a definition I dislike using about people I don't know. But if she was wrong - indeed, genau and yes sir. A green card holder is fully authorized to work, you just need to bring the proof that you are.

Go to different SSA( https://secure.ssa.gov/apps6z/FOLO/fo001.jsp ) or email through this link; http://ssa-custhelp.ssa.gov/app/ask_feedback

Good :) Just make sure to grap that application - as Darnell says - if it doesn't go through. Otherwise you're going to be stuck in a pending situation where you can't do anything but wait maybe a month for an answer without being able to apply at a different location.

My wife's SSN is stuck in the pending situation for about a month. We checked SSN on DS-230. After POE about 3 weeks, we went to SSA office and ask about the SSN. They asked us to fill out the SSN application and ask us to wait. 2 weeks later, we went to SSA office again, we are told her information has been verified with DHS, but no number has been assigned and keep waiting. I called again today and was told it is pending. :-(. I asked what's pending on, he says immmigration. That's what they said last time. My wife already received her green card for about 3 weeks now, I am so frustrated.. Darnell or Moomin, anything else I can do?

It seems as if they won't hand out personal information through phone in the US and that way you're getting almost generic answers without any details("pending"). I know some have gotten a printout and their ssn is on there when showing up in person. I know I read that somewhere several times, also recently.. http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/357706-ssn-quickly/
