I blame it on the pre-school atmosphere that is allowed to run rampid here and that the mods don't seem to be able to see the forest through the trees.

There's so much about this sentence that needs fixing, but I'm afraid it wouldn't do any good.

Those dark blue and dark red spots are rapidly spreading out across the country. (By the way, the maps I posted included "overweight" as well as "obese" children - so somewhat different parameters.)

But what was once perceived to be a "southern problem" (and it certainly was and still is a problem in the south) has become a nationwide problem, and it's especially disturbing in the number of children affected. Fat children very often become fat adults, much more often than they become healthy-weight adults.

We need to address this as a country, or we will be paying a very heavy (no pun intended) price in regard to our children's long-term health - and everyone will pay a lot more for health insurance due to the cost of treating skyrocketing rates of diabetes and other obesity-related health problems.

San Antonio already has one of the highest rates of diabetes in the country - 1 out of 6 people here has Type 2 diabetes. It's definitely related to obesity and inactivity, and it strikes the Hispanic population especially hard. The city has started many initiatives to address this issue, but the problem really needs nationwide attention.

I absolutely agree with you. It is definitely a spreading problem. In this state there is a major lack of information relating to food. The WIC program gives out chocolate milk, I find that very hard to understand. The WIC food education classes are weak at best. Who can take a government agency seriously that gives out sugary treats as a solution to "women, and to infants and children up to age five who are found to be at nutritional risk"? Little attempt is being made to fix any of these issues on a state level. I can only speak about this state, but I'm sure the other states have the same problems as we do. It's great that Michelle Obama has been promoting exercise, if only there was one of her for every state.

Some of the stuff I read on VJ causes it to grow at a faster rate than a supernova which isn't good for me

I need to be re-humbled and made to feel ordinary again by posts which are truly impressive in their insight and knowledge of their subject
