It's amazing how a changed diet can make a difference. When I lived in England I used to eat fish and chips and pork pies and then go to the pub every night and have three pints of beer and 2 bags of crisps (chips)

The whites of my eyes were yellowish and my blood pressure was 150/95 and my weight was 208 (at least)

Now I live with puritans in the USA, I hardly drink and the fish and chips are inedible. Americans wonder what the fuss is about British fish and chips - if they came to west yorkshire and ate Icelandic haddock (not breaded !) they would be amazed.

I also drink about two beers a week !

My eyes are now white (the whites are) and my blood pressure is 124/80 and I weigh 196

I feel really sorry for Americans who are going to die from over weight - the junk food here is obscene in its disregard for human health.. Of course one does not have to eat it - so it's education plus pressure from health organizations and schools that is needed

Our biggest (no pun intended) problem is childhood obesity. Look at the change within just a 2 year span:

In 2007, only three states in the entire country were under the 25% rate for overweight and obese children (ages 10-17.) It's a nationwide problem.

I blame it on the pre-school atmosphere that is allowed to run rampid here and that the mods don't seem to be able to see the forest through the trees.

When people start hacking threads to create parallel threads and actually playing with the software and falsifying quotes etc - that is much worse than the infantile stuff which is usually quite forgettable

Some good stuff on here at the mo

Well researched

We have all heard of sickle cell anemia which demonstrates a physiological difference between races. However we can't discuss that further so we will have to talk about it in the pub under the cone of silence

ps I don't believe physiological differences are at play here anyway

Most are southern states. There's a clear correlation between the two maps, and the two you posted. The people who live on fast food and eat huge portions pass this onto their children. This needs to be addressed or it will perpetuate itself. Not sure how this is possible though? I would love to be able to tackle this issue in some way but it seems like an impossible task.

This relates to the chart I posted previously:

Overall, almost 33% of men who live in households with income at or above 350% of the poverty level are obese, while 29.2% of men who live below 130% of the poverty level are obese (Figure 1). The relationship between obesity and income in men varies by race and ethnicity. Among non-Hispanic black and Mexican-American men, obesity prevalence decreases as income (PIR) decreases; 44.5% of non-Hispanic black men with income at or above 350% of the poverty level are obese compared with 28.5% of those with income below 130% of the poverty level. Similarly, among Mexican-American men, 40.8% of those with income at or above 350% of the poverty level are obese compared with 29.9% of those below 130% of the poverty level. There is no significant difference in obesity prevalence by poverty level among non-Hispanic white men.

Within the last 48 hours - it matters not because the mods splatted it - but I haven't seen that done before

Hacking the system to set up a parallel feed thread is worse than BAD

That's a lot more sinister than calling someone a name

never mind its in the past now which is where it belongs

If you haven't seen it done before, then how do you know if it was done this time? Some people are very easily fooled yanno. Do you like magic?

This relates to the chart I posted previously:

Those dark blue and dark red spots are rapidly spreading out across the country. (By the way, the maps I posted included "overweight" as well as "obese" children - so somewhat different parameters.)

But what was once perceived to be a "southern problem" (and it certainly was and still is a problem in the south) has become a nationwide problem, and it's especially disturbing in the number of children affected. Fat children very often become fat adults, much more often than they become healthy-weight adults.

We need to address this as a country, or we will be paying a very heavy (no pun intended) price in regard to our children's long-term health - and everyone will pay a lot more for health insurance due to the cost of treating skyrocketing rates of diabetes and other obesity-related health problems.

San Antonio already has one of the highest rates of diabetes in the country - 1 out of 6 people here has Type 2 diabetes. It's definitely related to obesity and inactivity, and it strikes the Hispanic population especially hard. The city has started many initiatives to address this issue, but the problem really needs nationwide attention.
