Hey all,

I'm new to the board, but I've been researching here for a long time.

Here's my situation:

My wife is Japanese and has her interview next Tuesday in Tokyo. She just finished her health check, has all of her documents in order and is just waiting. Then we received an e-mail asking her to bring the W2s of my joint sponsor (my dad). I'm confused...

Why would they need these? I contacted the NVC to see if copies would do just fine (which they are), and they seemed a little confused as to why they would need them as well. The only other thing I could find was that my dad is the joint sponsor, but it was only my dad listed on the affidavit of support while my mom and dad are on the tax returns filed with the total income to meet requirements. Do they just want to verify that the income is coming from two sources?

Any takers? Will this screw up her visa chances? Please help me to calm my nerves at the very end of this trying process.

Any and all help is appreciated.

Best Regards to All,

Bill

You used tax forms instead of tax transcripts, they want copies of the W2's to prove the income was actually made. Anyone can put anything on a 1040 form and claim this is what they sent in. The W2's or 1099's are the actual proof of income.

You father's individual income needs to be confirmed. A joint return shows combined income.

As stated before, if dad is submitting tax returns instead of tax transcripts, all schedules and supporting documents are needed. If using a joint tax transcript, the sponsor's W2's/1099's would be needed to indicate their individual income.

If your mother's income is needed to meet the requirement then a form I-864A from your mother would be needed along with dad's I-864.

So basically your parents also had a joint return and they wanted to see the other half of it? Did you have to fill out any additional forms? My dad is disabled and collects social security while my mom works. Additionally, I am also working now after moving back from Japan in April and my employer has signed a form for me stating I am a permanent employee making X amount of dollars. Think this will help? My wife's interview is Tuesday and being this close to seeing her for the first time after nearly 4 months, the thought of another lengthy delay really puts me in the dumps!

I was the sponsor of my fiancé . The latest tax return I submitted was a joint return with my ex-wife. I only included my W2 but was never question about it being a joint return.

So I called 3 different places and got a dance around my question until I finally held the embassy's feet to the fire and told them that the other 2 places I was told to call didn't have my answer and told me to call the embassy again!

So, I do need my mother to sign an I-864A since my father's income alone on the AOS isn't enough to put us over. So my wife can still have her interview, they just cannot issue the visa until they get all the documents there.

I'm mailing everything tomorrow by UPS critical and it will be there around the same day as her interview date.

I'm not a religious person, but I'm praying some higher power will decide enough is enough and finally let me see my beautiful wife by the end of this month.

Thank you all for your help, ESPECIALLY Anh map!

Yes get your mother to sign the I-864A to, and I hope that gets you to the income level you need.

Yes, if it's a joint tax return and there's no I-864a, then copies of the W2 forms would be required to show the individual income. I would also provide a current pay stub for your father, to document his "current" income. W2 forms are about the past. Affidavits of support require information about past and current income, so it is best to document both.
