I thought the company took care of this for you at the first port that the goods entered? Customs clearance should be included in the quote you were given. As far as I was told, you fill in the forms & give them to the company. I was told it was better to be there before your goods arrived but I know a lot of people have had their family or partner receive the goods for them. As I understood, if your goods were selected for a search, then they would contact you to pay the inspection fee & then they could be transported by road to your destination. Otherwise you shouldn't incur any other charges.

You are probably right, but I read somewhere online that the CBP form is not valid until your arrival in the country.. so that made me wonder... and when I was on the phone with Excess Baggage I told them that I wont be there until 6th October and shipping my stuff on 20th (that is cos all my stuff is in Scotland and Im going to visit my family in Italy after shipping it, where I will be leaving from) and she mentioned to refer my fiance. I dunno maybe I am just worrying too much!

I will write that letter, just in case they contact my fiance' prior my arrival and ask for it.

On door to door service, an agent to clear customs is normally part of the deal. (Talking about bigger shipments coming on a boat) If the ship arrives in NY harbor and you live in the Midwest, then you or your fiancé aren't going to go to a NY customs office in person. There are professionals who cover that part. Your provider should arrange the ship, an agent, and a US moving company or freight truck to haul your stuff to your door.

If you're shipping a few boxes by air freight, then I don't know exactly where/how that happens but generally it's a seamless operation where your shipper takes care of it including any forms required to get it to your new door. They are in the business and should be able to explain it to you to your satisfaction. They wouldn't be in business long if they didn't know how to get goods from point A to point B including the proper paperwork.

I have to admit the shipping part was the most difficult to decide on. All those quotes want to know how many boxes of this size and that. Holy smokes! I don't even know which size luggage I'm taking on a two week trip until I pack. How do you know how many boxes it will take to hold your life? Then you get a reasonable quote but the kicker comes when you find out that doesn't cover insurance. Then the shipping container way to have insurance was all convoluted and as much as the shipping quote. We finally just gave up and picked the company that looked like they prepared their shipments with great care...all jeavily shrink wrapped onto a pallet with tie band "locks" showing they sealed it in England before turning it over. You would know if someone had pilfered through the boxes because the lock would be cut.

Ok, now it's all clear. Express Baggage got back to me to my questions. In order for my fiance' to be authorised to collect the delivery (at his address) I will have to fill in & sign a Nominee Letter where I authorize/nominate him to do so.

So nothing to do with customs clearance. It just allows him to receive a delivery with your name on it as the recipient.

I guess I got confused.. I read some stuff online (not their website) and made 1+1 but not considering the service they are providing (door to door). Now thanks to your comments I got how it works :)

For those wondering about shipping by standard carriers, UPS or FedEx etc, the process is easy and saved me quite a bit of money.

I did 4 20 inch cubes with UPS (booked through transglobal.org.uk). Total shipping weight was 101 kg for the four boxes, and it was a standard UPS shipment.

The only thing you need to do is fill out the CBP3299, give them a copy of the visa in your passport and a packing list which declares the value of each item.

The CBP is VERY easy to fill out, just attach it to the box.

Mine was picked up and delivered to me three days later pre 10:30 am. In my case, the customs form wasn't attached by UPS in Cardiff. UPS in the US just called me and said "can you fax this to this number". Did that, and then everything went fine.

Saved me about 400 pounds compared to transglobal, alfreight etc.

God it's like you spoke my mind! I am beginning to think all the quotes I have received now need to go out the window as I have way more than I anticipated! unsure.gif So hard to estimate how many boxes you're going to need...

I know, it's impossible to estimate how much you have in boxes, unless you set a limit to a certain number and trash what doesn't make it in. It's unbelievable how much stuff you can collect, even in the smallest flat! I had to pack my stuff 3 months ago as I was moving temporarily to London and kept all my stuff in boxes at a friend's, so I know how much I have since then..!!

Oh that was useful then you could figure out the quantity. I have slowly been working through my 4 bedroom house sorting through what I want to take & putting it into a spare room. I am trying to be practical now & only take things I know I will need/use or am terribly fond of & cannot live without. I know I will be home sick so I want to take as much as I can & not rid of my familiarities as it's hard enough having to start scratch. At least having my "stuff" will remind me of home.

Hello Guys, has anyone ever heard of excess baggage removals company in the UK. i AM PLANNING ON USING THEM TO MOVE MY items to the US. Any tips/advice would be highly appreciated

I got a really reasonable quote from them & I was advised to use them by a family member who moved to South East Asia for work. However they are based in London so if you live in & around the London area, it makes it much easier. They won't travel outside of London to pack for you but they will charge a courier fee to have empty boxes dropped off & then after you have packed them, they will charge to pick them up. If they packed for me, I would have booked them. They are really helpful on the phone but can't tell you about their overall service I'm afraid. Maybe try googling reviews from other people or searching here on VJ.

Hi. Did you read the thread before posting that?

The only reason I ask is that Excess Baggage are mentioned by at least four different people. It's difficult to give you more advice than what's already in here. Have a read through, and if you have any specific questions, then ask.
