Paterno Won Sweeter Deal Even as Scandal Played Out

In January 2011, the same month that Joe Paterno learned of an investigation into his longtime assistant coach Jerry Sandusky and testified before a grand jury, he began negotiating with his superiors to amend his contract. The timing was something of a surprise, because the contract was not set to expire until the end of 2012, according to university documents and people with knowledge of the discussions.

By August, Mr. Paterno, who was the football coach at Penn State, and the university’s president, both of whom were by then embroiled in the investigation into Mr. Sandusky’s sexual assaults on boys, had reached an agreement. Mr. Paterno was to be paid $3 million at the end of the 2011 season if he agreed it would be his last. Interest-free loans totaling $350,000 would be forgiven, and he would have use of the university’s private plane.

Just heard in in the news - they have removed the statue. And they are talking about making the football program inactive/banned for a period of time.

That just punishes the kids currently playing football for PSU. Punish those who were responsible, not the kids in the program atm.

Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

 The fact is that Penn state has demonstrated through their actions over the past 2+ decades that they cannot handle having a football program without it corrupting the integrity of the entire university. Let the players transfer without penalty to another school and enforce the ban that seems to be coming.

Its good the statue is gone.

Close down the football program for a while, and let the kids transfer.

You cut out Penn St. football and your going to be killing a lot of programs...and I'm not just talking sports programs. Penn St. football revenue pays for a lot more than just football there. That and I can't see screwing the kids that had nothing to do with this. You can't just "transfer" these kids to another program. It's not that easy. Again punish the ones RESPONSIBLE for this travesty, not the kids who were in elementary school when this all began.

Agreed. Because of the gravity of the crime, folks are not satisfied with just punishing the ones responsible. They are out for blood and the kids are a casualty of it.

Whatever the NCAA hands down to Penn State, I will have a hard time respecting, as the NCAA is hardly a pillar of integrity and honesty.

+1

The NCAA is a total joke anymore. I have more respect for the totalitarian regime in North Korea than that bunch of hypocrites.

Punishing the guilty is one necessary step but I think we have seen this same urge to conceal this type of behavior time and time again in every institution.

The fear of being an accomplice to such a cover-up must me made so great as to override the fear of the scandal of reporting the perp.

Facilitators in the cover up must be held accountable as accomplices in the same way as the get-a-way driver of a bank robbery will be charged in whatever crime the parties doing the robbery commit in the Bank.
