Sandusky Sex Abuse Investigation Faults Paterno and Others at Penn State

The most senior officials at Penn State University failed for more than a decade to take any steps to protect the children victimized by Jerry Sandusky, the longtime lieutenant to head football coach Joe Paterno, according to an independent investigation of the sex abuse scandal that rocked the university last fall.

“Our most saddening and sobering finding is the total disregard for the safety and welfare of Sandusky’s child victims,” said Louis J. Freeh, the former federal judge and director of the F.B.I. who oversaw the investigation. “The most powerful men at Penn State failed to take any steps for 14 years to protect the children who Sandusky victimized.”

Because of scandals like this, good people who want to help kids will be under such scrutiny it's a wonder anyone would want their jobs.

Sadly, probably not. It's amazing how many people supported him and others when it was obvious they'd known and should have done something to stop it. And why did they support these people? Because of FOOTBALL? School loyalty? Gross.

It's terrible. I couldn't believe it when it happened. The school should be penalized and not be allowed to play football games until this has been resolved. It wouldn't be good for the students or the school, but this is a serious issue and it needs to be treated appropriately.

Paterno's name to be stripped off of Nike headquarters' child care building

Whether or not the now-infamous statue of Joe Paterno remains standing will no doubt be a matter of highly-charged debate both on and off Penn State's campus for days and weeks to come. But Nike has decided it won't wait where the child care center at its Beaverton, Ore. headquarters is concerned: Paterno's name will be stripped off the building.

As recently as last September, Nike said it has no plans to rename the "Joe Paterno Child Development Center," though a Nike spokesperson told the Oregonian the company was "disturbed" by the indictments brought against Jerry Sandusky and would "continue to monitor the situation closely." Thursday's release of the Freeh Report apparently changed the "situation" enough that Nike felt it had to act, with CNBC's Darren Rovell reporting that the decision had already been made to remove Paterno's name from the facility.

"I have been deeply saddened by the news coming out of this investigation at Penn State," Nike CEO Mike Parker said in a statement. "It is a terrible tragedy that children were unprotected from such abhorrent crimes. With the findings released today, I have decided to change the name of our child care center at our World Headquarters. My thoughts are with the victims and the Penn State community."

If you don't allow the school to play football games, you're punishing the innocent kids who went there to play football, along with their parents who have paid the kids tuition. The proper way to hand out punishment is to fine the school heavily and fire anyone else that knew about it. I would be in favor of giving a good chunk of the money collected from the fines to the boys club that Sandusky took advantage of for all of those years.

The victims of abuse weren't innocent? They weren't punished? Being raped is far more severe than being prevented from playing football for a year. I understand what you're saying but donating to a charity isn't a harsh enough punishment for the school. The people running the school and the football team were responsible for letting children be raped over a long period of time. The credibility of this school has been ruined by all of the people involved.

Ofcourse the abuse victims were innocent, I am not comparing being raped to not playing football. But how do you rectify that by punishing even more innocent kids and their parents? Some of these kids are there on football scholarships with hopes of making the pros, are you going to take that away from them because of something they had nothing to do with? Punish the school itself and hit them where it counts the most, the wallet. Fire, fine and prosecute everyone that played a role in covering it up. The school will be feeling the affects of this for a very long time to come.
