Ex-prisoners allowed to vote ?

The US is the toughest of the 1st world countries when it comes to allowing released prisoners to vote (Wouldn't you know)

Most 1st world countries even allow people IN prison to vote

The UK is in hot water with the EEC for not allowing this but it allows all released prisoners to vote immediately

In the US, it's like everything else and racially/politically driven. Most prisoners are black. Most black people vote Democrat - so waderyaknow ex-prisoners cant vote in many right wing states

If they take away their vote, they shouldn't have to pay taxes. Wasn't that the whole thing that got the revolution going? Taxation without representation.

That's correct - nobody on death row in any European country has ever voted - coz there isn't a death row

Nah that was all about tax free smuggling from Holland that the brits tried to ban

Holland financed the revolution along with Spain and France

Anyway, my thoughts are that part of the purpose of imprisonment is 'rehabilitation' where a person can be a useful full citizen again

A job, a car, a house, and the right to vote

The people who want to bear down on them for life, don't believe in rehabilitation - only the punishment aspect and to me, banning voting after release is ongoing punishment

I do think that as part of the jail punishment, they should not be allowed to vote while in prison (the current UK position) but I don't go with mainland Europe that believes prisoners should vote in prison

Well yes but most ex prisoners wont be paying taxes - unless its a politician like Blago

But the principle is there..

Perhaps paroled prisoners should not vote as they are still technically prisoners and being punished

I say no.

You have to say why you think 'no' otherwise there is no point posting

You have to stitch together a reasoned position

You can't just put NO coz its a discussion forum and everybody is chewing the carpet and foaming at the mouth with frustration because they don't know WHY you say NO

Even my wife doesn't just say No - she says "I have a headache" " or "I don't want to wake the cat"

Nobody has thoughts that only last for one word..
